MANILA, Philippines - Tough veteran warrior Tosho Makoto Aoki (17-12-2, 14 KO's) of Osaka, Japan, scored a devastating round 4 technical KO win over Filipino Jonel Alibio (16-18-5, 8 KO's) of Bikidnon to capture the vacant WBC Asian Lightweight (135 lbs) belt last night here in Manila, Philippines.
The victory was the third knock out victory for Aoki here in the Philippines, and the tough Japanese fighter wants more scalps. The referee was Mr. Virgilio Garcia of Nueva Ecija and the official time was at the 18 seconds mark of round four.
In the co-main event, 22-year-old hard hitting southpaw "The Demolition Man" Alie Laurel (12-3, 8 KO's) of Gensan did not waste a single second to ravage Bacolod's Mike Espanosa (12-8-1, 7 KO's) in less than 2 minutes of action to make the successful first defense of his WBO Oriental Bantamweight (118 lbs) title. Official time was 1:50 minutes of round 1. Fight supervisor was Mr. Antonio M. Cornia.
In the most surprising and rewarding win of the evening, 31-year-old unheralded Filipino Argie Toquero (7-3-1, 5 KO's) of Labason, Zamboanga del Norte, achieved the most important success in his boxing career by knocking out tough Nippon boxer Kenichi Yamaguchi (17-3-2, 4 KO's) to capture the vacant WBC Asian super bantamweight (122 lbs) strap.
Yamaguchi was the same fighter who went to battle with lion heart Mexican Orlando Salido three years ago, but that did feat not impress the tough Toquero who overpowered the seasoned Japanese in relentless fashion, the third man Mr. Ferdinand Estrella declaring the knock out win in favor of the Zamboangue?o at the 2:41 minutes mark of round 9.
A great win for Argie Toquero, the new WBC Asian 122-pounder king.
In another exciting Philippines VS Japan clash, 16-year-old Japanese southpaw Riku Kanou (1-1-1, 0 KO's) of Kawanishi, Hyogo, and Filipino debutant Vecinte Montecino fought to a draw after four rounds of battle in the 105-pound division.
Also, Japanese super lightweight Kenta Ide (1-1, 0 KO's) of Osaka outpointed Jason Catalino over four rounds of action.
In the first rumble of the evening, 22-year-old Warlight Dapidran (2-0, 1 KO) of Sarangani knocked out debutant Juanito Paredes in the second round of their scheduled 4 round fight in the super featherweight (126 lbs) division.
The exciting Philippines VS Japan card last night (May 10) at the Olivarez Stadium in Barangay San Dionisio, Para?aque City, Metro Manila, was a production of Highland Boxing.
