Former IBF minimumweight world champion Florante Condes is set for his second appearance this year after twelve months of absence when he fights Cris Alfante for the vacant IBF Pan Pacific 105 lb. division title on March 15. Both Condes (26W-8L-1D, 22KO's) and Alfante (10W-1L, 3KO's) made the miniflyweight limit during the weigh-in held Friday supervised by GAB Com. Fritz Gaston, who is the assigned IBF supervisor, GAB Chief of boxing Dr. Nasser Cruz, and Promoters Bebot Elorde and Aljoe Jaro.
Jaro, who informed philboxing of this match and the weigh-in, is very optimistic about Condes' chances to turn his career around and become a world champion again. Condes vs Alfante will be held at the San Dionisio Gym in Paranaque City.
"Condes approached me for another chance and I accepted," Jaro stated in his e-mail, "I noticed his moves and power were still there, all he needs is the proper training and motivation. I had to give him another opportunity. What happened is all in the past. This fight will be the path for him to take back the IBF world title."
Condes, who sports the moniker "Little Pacquiao", thanked Jaro for the opportunity to train once again in his gym and promised to try his best to win another world title. He wants to show the fans that he is not washed up. He has also reflected on the boxers training in the Jaro Boxing gym like Denver Cuello and former WBC flyweight champ Sonny Boy Jaro who he considers to have done well for themselves. Last January, Condes won by first round TKO against Charlie Cabilla. Condes had a brief reign as IBF champ in 2007 when he dethroned Muhamad Rachman by split decision in Jakarta. He lost by split decision in his first defense to Raul Garcia of Mexico in a fight held in La Paz, Baja California Sur. In 2012, Condes lost a unanimous decision to Hekkie Budler in South Africa in his attempt to win the IBO title and he was inactive for the whole of 2013.
Alfante, who bears the ring moniker "Asero", beat Oliver Gregorio last October by unanimous decision in Paranaque City for the vacant WBC Asia Boxing Council minumumweight title. His only loss happened in 2011, a split decision to Ben Manangquil in Caloocan City. Jaro also stated that Denver Cuello will make his return to the ring this June. Cuello suffered a shoulder injury in his ill-fated attempt to win the WBC world strawweight title last year but has also vowed to make a successful comeback.
This Paranaque fight card Saturday will start at 6PM with the main event set at 10PM.
