
JOEBERT ALVAREZ GEARS UP FOR FIRST OVERSEAS STINT

Flyweight prospect Joebert Alvarez (13W-0L-1D, 6 KO?s) is now in the U.S. training under Nonito Donaire,Sr for his April 4 battle in Mexico against Juilan Rivera (13W-8L-1D, 2KO?s). The 24 year old Alvarez, is an ?under the radar? prot?g? of Donaire,Sr. Three years ago, he won the light flyweight category of the GMA7 boxing reality show and tournament BUHAY BOKSINGERO and has remained unbeaten since then.
Alvarez, who hails from Gen.Santos City, arrived in California a couple of days ago and Donaire stated in his e-mail message that his training has been progressing really well.
The southpaw Alvarez? most memorable win in the BUHAY BOKSINGERO tournament was his semi-final victory in Argao,Cebu against RJ Gonzales. Unknown to the people at ringside, Alvarez fought with an upset stomach due to the early effects of gastroenteritis. Alvarez knocked down Gonzales in the opening round but he had to endure bouts of vomiting for the rest of the fight. Alvarez showed his courage by continuing to fight and would win a split decision but he had to be brought to a local hospital to be rehydrated. He would beat Delmar Cabatas in the finals held in Bohol one month later.
Alvarez had a career best win in 2012 against another previously undefeated prospect, Renren Tesorio, by unanimous decision in Mandaue City. Eight months later he would acquire the interim WBO Asia-Pacific light flyweight title by 6th round knockout against Jerry Tomogdan.
Rivera captured the Mexican flyweight title last November by split decision against Ulises Lara. In 2012, he lost a unanimous decision in a WBA interim world flyweight title contest to Juan Carlos Reveco. He will fight Alvarez for the WBC Continental Americas flyweight title.
