CotaiArena, Macau ? Marvin 'Marvelous' Sonsona knocked out cold former world champion Akifumi Shimoda of Japan with a stunning left uppercut in the 3rd round that brought a sudden halt to the rather dry proceedings of the ongoing battle that left the jampacked Venetian crowd in awe. Sonsona thus makes a successful comeback by capturing the vacant WBO International Featherweight Title and put his career right on target for a possible world title fight this year.

Sonsona was very calculating in the in the first two rounds as Shimoda was more active, going forward and throwing more punches while Sonsona was content on defending himself by throwing an occasional jab and combinations. The third round appeared to be going in the same direction when suddenly, boom! ? a short left uppercut by Sonsona connected to Shimoda's jaw that dropped Shimoda to the canvas cold and left the crowd stunned. Referee Danrex Tapdasan didn't even bother to count and it took a good few minutes before Shimoda was able to regain his senses. Official time of stoppage was at 1:17 of the 3rd round.

?Sonsona is a notch above Donaire and two notches below Pacquiao,? International promoter and matchmaker Sampson Lewkowicz told Philboxing before the fight, and Lewkowicz appeared to be right on the money as Sonsona showed a more cunning approach to the fight game tonight.

Sonsona improved his record to 18 wins against 1 defeat and 1 draw with 15 knockouts. Shimoda dropped to 28-4-2, 12 Kos.
