PABA light welterweight champion Czar Amonsot of Bohol made a successful first title defense today by knocking out Indonesian challenger Stevi Ongen Ferdinandus in ten rounds in a fight held in Australia. This is Amonsot?s fourth win since relocating down under.

The 28 year old Amonsot now has a 7 win ? 2 draw record since he suffered what could have been a career-ending injury during his memorable 2007 ring war against Michael Katsidis of Australia in Las Vegas.

After losing a unanimous verdict to Katsidis, Amonsot was taken to a hospital and a tiny blood clot was discovered in his brain during an MRI exam. He was sidelined for a year and a half before making a successful comeback after undergoing the needed medical tests and was subsequently cleared by doctors. Amonsot responded by winning three fights in the Philippines.

Amonsot (25-3-3, 15KO'S), a former ALA Gym boxer, is now living in Australia and being trained by Todd Makelim, a former Australia flyweight and bantamweight champion. Amonsot got his Pan Asian Boxing Association (PABA) belt last September 12 with a third round knockout win over Australian Steven Wills. Last February, Amonsot stopped Addisu Tebebu in six rounds for the Australia light welterweight title.

Amonsot vs Ferdinandus was held at the Melbourne Pavilion in Victoria.

In a series of news reports a few months ago, Amonsot was one of the boxers mentioned as victims of a Filipino-Australian who allegedly exploited Filipino boxers. The Filipino boxers were brought to Australia on sporting visas and then allegedly forced to live and work as slaves.

The Australian Federal Police investigated the matter and reports coming out from Australia last October 10 stated that three members of a Filipino-Australian family - Boxing promoter Herminigildo Bohol and his relatives Jeffrey Bohol and Michelle Bohol - were arrested by the Australian Federal Police and charged with four counts of trafficking and exploitation.

Last Tuesday, Amonsot?s home island of Bohol was the epicenter of a magnitude 7.2 earthquake that resulted in the deaths of more than a hundred people. Bohol is a prime tourist destination here in Philippines and is known for its Chocolate Hills and centuries old churches which have been devastated by the quake.

Philboxing joins the entire Filipino nation in praying for the earthquake victims and survivors.
