Downtown Los Angeles:- In the beginning, the big match between the former WBC middle weight champion, Mexico?s Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 42KO) and his picked opponent, Bryan Vera (23-6-1, 14KO) of Austin, Texas was agreed upon to be contested at 163 lbs.
Then it was moved to 168 pounds and it was also postponed due to a ?cut? suffered by Chavez during training.
Chavez Jr., the son Mexican boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. eventually informed everyone that the fight may finally be made at a higher weight, something like 172 lbs.
But that was not for sure.
Chavez Jr. has no qualms about moving the weight up as according to him ?it?s not a title fight?.
Bob Arum apparently agreed with him. At the presscon Wednesday Arum made a joke of the whole situation and said that the weight will be determined today when the fighters will finally step on the scales.
HBO who stands to make a big profit off this fight, has not said anything to the contrary.
Vera however, who was alleged to have been paid a six figure amount to accept the weight of Chavez today indicated that if the pampered Mexican hits 180 lbs during the weigh-in, there will be no fight.
Yesterday, reports indicate that those involved finally agreed to have the fight at 173 lbs.
This afternoon at the official weigh-in held at the historic Biltmore Hotel in downtown LA the issue was finally settled.
The weigh-in that never was, was finally done.
Brian Vera stepped on the scales and the pointer read 171.2 pounds. After he got off the scales, everyone, well at least those in the media section, hoist a sigh of relief when Chavez Jr., came in at 172.4 pounds.
Therefore, the fight is on!
The only question that is now hurting for an answer is with the impending weight discrepancy between the two when they rehydrate after the weigh-in is what can possibly happen to Vera come fight night.
There are concerns that Vera who is naturally smaller, will be so greatly outweigh by Chavez at fight night that the danger of him being gravely hurt remains a distinct possibility.
But Vera does not seem disturbed by the weight issue as he knows himself more than anyone else. Evidently, Team Vera headed by one of the best trainers in the business, Ronnie Shields, feels the same.
That fact that Vera was said to have received more money (in addition to his guaranteed purse) to settle the weight issue serves as an incentive for him to continue with the fight.
More importantly, he firmly believes that he can really beat Chavez Jr.
Vera indicated that he is strong and is ready to work to win. He also indicated that he is prepared to fight his fight in the ring.
Hopefully nothing grave will happen to him or even Chavez and both will come back to fight another day.
