Czar Amonsot of Bohol scored a major win and a regional belt in Australia last September 12 with a third round knockout win over Steven Wills for the vacant PABA light welterweight title. The 28 year old Amonsot (24W-3L-3D, 14 KO?s) is now based in Australia and his Aussie trainer Todd Makelim e-mailed philboxing a couple of days ago and brought this to our attention. Amonsot?s win has been under the radar here in the Philippines.

Wills was 17-1-2, 9 KO?s going into this bout. Amonsot, who used to dye his hair blonde, sported a mohawk in this bout. The two southpaws engaged mostly at close quarters. Amonsot hurt Wills in the second with a punch to the temple.

The more experienced Amonsot jumped at the opportunity to end it early and landed a series of vicious volleys but the wobbly Wills managed to hang on. Amonsot finished the job in the 3rd with a hard right hook and the referee wisely halted the carnage.

Makelim, who showed us the link for the bout's video, also expressed his thoughts about the fight: ?I believe that the ref or his trainer should have stopped it in the 2nd round after a brutal attack that Czar bashed him corner to corner. He survived the round. Was thinking his corner would stop the fight rather letting him come out for the 3rd to get knocked out. Steven Wills has had a 4th round knockout over Chad Bennett who is Jimrex Jaca next opponent in Sydney, Australia?.

Prior to the Wills fight, Amonsot stopped Addisu Tebebu in six rounds for the Australia light welterweight title. Amonsot has a 3W-2D record since relocating down under in 2010.

Filipino fight fans may remember Makelim as having fought Manny Pacquiao in 1999 and losing by third round TKO in a non-title contest in Kidapawan City, North Cotabato. Manny back then was the reigning WBC world flyweight champion.

Amonsot is a former ALA Boxer and his most famous ring war was a losing battle against Michael Katsidis in 2007. This fight sidelined him for a year and a half and he made a successful return in 2009 by stopping Indonesian Zoel Fidal in five rounds in his home island of Bohol and two more wins after that in Cebu City.

Amonsot was one of the Filipino boxers mentioned in a disturbing news report last July where an Australia-based Filipino was allegedly exploiting Filipino fighters and using them as unpaid houseboys. The Australia Federal Police were reported to be investigating the case.

With his latest win, it seems things are looking up for Amonsot down under.
