WBC World featherweight champion Abner Mares (26-0-1, 14KO) of nearby Hawaiian Gardens lost a surprising fight against a former world champion, Jhonny Gonzalez of Mexico City (54-8-0, 46KO). Gonzalez stopped him in round one.
Mares fought as though he was the challenger and very hungry for a title. He kept Gonzalez at bay most of the time with his sharp counters and pin point jabs that seemed to come from every angle.
Gonzalez for his part fought like a true champion that he was. He never gave up and continued to pursue Mares with every punch coming with bad intentions.
All of a sudden Gonzalez landed a left and Mares went down.
Mares beat the count but he was wobbly. When the fight continued, Gonzalez rained him with punches knocking him down again and for good.
The ref stopped the fight at 2:55 of the first.
