ANOTHER HEARTBREAK FOR JUANITO RUBILLAR

Former world title challenger, Juanito Rubillar (49-21-7, 24KO) of Mati, Davao Oriental who is now campaigning in the US and Mexico failed once again to rekindle his once promising career.

Rubillar also lost his last fight to John Amuzu at San Diego last June but before that, he won via TKO over Basilio Nieves at the same City last February.

However before that win, Rubillar suffered 6 straight losses from February 2010 to June 2012.

Tonight at the Quiet Canon in Montebello, CA, Rubillar faced a young aggressive Russian in Khabir Suleymanov (16-3-0,6KO) in an 8 round super bantamweight fight tagged at 120lbs.

The fight from the beginning was an all action slugfest. Rubillar dropped Suleymanov in round 4 but the Russian was able to recover and reversed the trend of the fight as it got to the later rounds.

In the end, Suleynanov in spite of being dropped got a unanimous decision win with all judges scoring the fight at 78-72.

To this writer, the result of the fight was not unexpected. Rubillar was at the presscon yesterday for the Pac-Rios fight in Beverly Hills when he was scheduled to have a weigh-in later in the day at Montebello, some 50 miles away.

?Okay naman ang weigh natin. Walang problema? ( My weigh is okay, no problem) he said when I asked him about his scheduled weigh-in.

With such approach to the fight game, it's no small wonder he now has turned out to be a journey man and gate keeper for guys like Suleymanov who are keen in improving their records.

One interesting incident about Rubillar was the fact that after his fight, no one was around to take him back to his hotel which was about 5 miles away from the venue. He was lucky a couple of Pinoys (Drian Francisco and Jhay Otamias) were around to give him a ride.
