CEBU ? The most successful promotional company in the country unveiled their latest project designed to create a new generation of boxing stars and further boost the sport into the mainstream. In a press conference held Thursday at the Alpa City Suites in Mandaue City, ALA Promotions made the official announcement for the commencement of their new television program ?IDOL?, which will showcase young, up and coming boxers, and will be shown on Studio 23 of ABS-CBN.
ALA Promotions Pres. and CEO Michael Aldeguer said that this show will give the fighters more exposure and will give the fans a chance to see them on television. Most of these boxers, even if their names appear very now and then on the sports pages, have never been seen on television. ALA Promotions created their ?Idol? Department to handle this program. This will be separate from the highly successful 'PINOY PRIDE' series but 'IDOL' promises to change the landscape of Philippine boxing.
?This is not a reality show,? Aldeguer said, ?This is not intended to be a reality show. It will showcase new talent like Jessel Mark Magsayo, who has been described by my father (Antonio Aldeguer) as the best talent that he has seen, and he has seen the likes of former world champions like Gerry Pe?alosa, Rodel Mayol and Malcolm Tu?acao, who have all started their boxing careers under him.?
This show will be a vehicle for young fighters to make a name for themselves and if they are found deserving, to be featured in the Pinoy Pride series. This will also be used as an opportunity to scout new talent nationwide. This is a 10-15 year program and the tickets will be priced lower than the Pinoy Pride shows.
Aldeguer also emphasized that the Philippines is still behind Mexico in terms of boxing technology and even in the promotional aspect but boxing programs like IDOL and PINOY PRIDE will enable us to catch up in terms of having more talent available.
ALA Promotions VP Dennis Ca?ete said that the show will start on August 24 in Escalante City with Melvin Gumban and Mark Bernaldez and will be aired starting September 14.
This show will also feature the likes of Albert Pagara and Mark Acub in future episodes. The format is a two hour telecast every month from 12noon to 2 PM. The events will be held in the major cities of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
