Romnick Magos of the RWS Gym of Cebu beat Kohei Kubo of Japan by 5th round TKO in a non-title fight held Saturday July 6 in Tokyo. Magos? trainer Juanito Ablaca informed philboxing of the fight result.
Ablaca stated in his e-mail message that Magos was knocked down in the third but he continued to fight back until the referee halted the fight because Kubo was no longer punching back. Ablaca said that Magos impressed the fans with his non-stop punching style and he was compared to former WBA world flyweight champion Bernabe Villacampo.
Magos is now 9W-2L, 5 KO?s while Kubo drops to 15W-4L-1D, 10 KO?s. The 22 year old Magos won the WBO Youth Asia-Pacific flyweight title last December when he also rose from the canvas to beat countryman Aston Palicte in Taguig City. Magos was down face first in the opening round but he continued to bring the fight to Palicte and stop him in the fourth. That feat earned him a citation during the 31st SAC-SMB Cebu Sports Awards last March. RWS Promotions had earlier informed this writer that Magos will no longer defend his WBO regional belt.
Magos had previously lost in his bid to win the IBF Pan-Pacific belt in Thailand when he lost to Rusalee Samor by unanimous decision.
