CEBU CITY ? World title challenger Tomoki Kameda of Japan and his team had a press conference at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel Thursday noon which was attended by the Cebu boxing writers and members of the media from Japan.
Kameda (27-0, 18 KO?s) will face WBO bantamweight champion Paulus Ambunda (20-0, 10 KO?s) of Namibia in a fight that is sure to make its mark in the city known as the boxing capital of the Philippines. This will be the first time that two foreign boxers will fight for a world title here in Cebu.
In 2009, Michael Katsidis of Australia fought Angel Hugo Ramirez of Spain at the Cebu Coliseum in a WBO regional title bout. Kameda is counting on the support of the Japanese community here in the Philippines as well as the hardcore fight fans here in Cebu.
?I trained hard for this fight.? Kameda said, ?I will give the fans a good fight, I want to showcase my skills in front of the Cebu fans. I will go for the knockout win.? Kameda has fought several times in Mexico.
He had a good week of sparring at the RWS gym against Philippine super flyweight champ Marco Demecillo, former WBO Youth Asia-Pacific flyweight titlist Romnick Magos and Gerpaul Valero.
The press conference was also attended by Satoshi Shima, the manager of Kameda Promotions and Joji Katayama , producer of Tokyo Broadcasting System Television,Inc and the Filipino trainer of the Kameda gym, Sulpicio Anoos.
If the Cebu fans will pack the Waterfront Hotel for this title bout, Team Kameda stated that they will fight here again and the card could very well feature the other Kameda brothers - Koki, the WBA bantamweight champion and Daiki, a former WBA flyweight champion.
Also present during the presscon were three local boxers featured on the undercard.
Prospect Marlon ?The Nightmare? Tapales (22-2, 9 KO?s) heads the undercard matches and could very well face a Mexican or Argentinian boxer instead of Fredirex Rodriguez of Bukidonon. Tapales bounced back from his majority decision loss to David Sanchez in Mexico to stop Ruben Manakane of Indonesia in a fight held in Japan last May.
?I learned a lot from my fight in Mexico,? Tapales said, ?I realized I need to work harder, train harder to reach the top level. I know it was a close fight that I could have won, I should have, I was close to winning but I still need to work on a lot of things.?
?I just landed a good punch on Manakane,? Tapales added when asked about his fight against the Indon who lost a unanimous decision to AJ Banal last year.
Up and coming prospect Ardie Boyose and local Cinderella man Gerpaul Valero were equally excited to be fighting on a big Waterfront card for the first time. Both boxers have become regulars in small cards held here in Cebu.
The August 1 card will start at 5 PM and the main event will be on 7PM (8PM Japan time) and beamed live to Japan.
