WINTER IN JUNE? YES, IN SOUTH AFRICA

Johannesburg, South Africa - Since we were all young, we have always been made to believe that Winter season starts from October to December and in some places stretches up to January and February.

Yesterday, I was jolted when I realized that even at my age, there is still a lot of things in this world that I have to know and learn.

Waking up for my first morning in Johannesburg after a long 18-hour flight from Manila, I had to rush back to my room to get my sports coat because it was freezing outside of the hotel.

I did not bring any winter gear because it never occurred to me that it would very cold in South Africa at this time of year which is supposed to be Summer going to Fall in North America and just the rainy months in the Philippines.

Weather indicators yesterday showed that it was about 13 degrees with the Mercury slightly rising to 21 degrees towards lunchtime.

Workers at the Peermont Metcourt Hotel in the Emperor?s Palace Resort and Casino Complex told me that it was very cold last Monday morning when the Mercury dipped to 5 degrees followed by 11 degrees last Tuesday.

?Winter in South Africa starts June up to August,? a white South African whom I engaged in a conversation told me.

He added, however, that in some parts of South Africa, Winter could start as early as May.

In spite of the very cold climate at this time of the year, snow could only be found in several parts of South Africa.

Yesterday, North Cotabato boxer Edrin ?The Sting? Dapudong had to wait until about 10 a.m. before he jogged and warmed up in the parking lot of the Emperor?s Palace Resort and Casino Complex because of the very cold morning.

In spite of the cold mornings and nights in South Africa, Dapudong has primed himself for the fight on Saturday.

Yesterday, after the jog and warm up, he weighed in at 117 lbs., just two pounds over the 115-lb. weight limit for the World Junior Bantamweight Championship sanctioned by the International Boxing Organization (IBO).
