WILL THE MAYWEATER-ALVAREZ TIFF BE EXCITING?

Floyd Mayweather Jr., after a very surprising short ?fight negotiations? orchestrated by Richard Schaefer of the GBP and the Money Team?s Al Haymon, announced Wednesday that he signed the contract to fight Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez, the 22-year old Mexican up and coming boxing star at the MGM in Las Vegas on September 14th.
The fight will be done at a catch-weight of 152 pounds.
Immediately after the news flooded the social media and news outlets of every kind, the boxing world and people who have even the most minuscule interest in boxing, started to rejoice.
?The fight that people have been hoping for is finally made,? one pundit stated. ?It will be the biggest fight this year and may even hit 2million PPV,? he added.
?Amen, amen" others said.
Yes, it maybe the ?biggest fight? this year, but that?s all in perspective. In fairness, with Canelo?s Mexican followers it may indeed come close to that. For all we know the whole of Guadalajara and Grand Rapids, MI, will be in Vegas.
Oh, the fight may make well over a million PPV due in part to the Mexicans and Mayweather haters who will pay anything to see Mayweather lose. However, with today?s technology it will be safe to say that it may struggle to make anything close to 2M... That is because the PPV may be gravely affected by ?live streaming.?
Granting without admitting that it maybe the ?biggest fight of 2013? or it may make close to 2M PPV, will it be an exciting fight?
For the ordinary boxing fan that pays to see blood and guts all over the ring, I say it won?t!
But, for the sake of the sports of boxing, I hope I am wrong.
I say it won?t because of the inherent way Mayweather fights. In fact, it may well be just a boxing clinic similar to the Mayweather-Guerrero debacle which reportedly made a measly 850T in PPV.
In fairness however, to the boxing ?purist? the ?clinic? may well be exciting.
Due to their hate or love of Mayweather, ordinary fans often forget that Mayweather?s fight style is ?hit and don?t get hit.? To accomplish that, he uses his fast footwork to run around the ring, shoulder roll and a sneaky right jab.
Alvarez who has a penchant for sometimes fighting in spurts and recklessly throwing haymakers in the wind will be a sucker for Floyd?s above-mentioned style.
Canelo is naturally heavier than Mayweather and regularly fights at 154lbs. That may work as an advantage or a disadvantage for him depending on the events of the evening.
Because he is naturally bigger, it maybe an advantage if he lands a haymaker. But realistically, being heavy and carrying that entire load may work to his disadvantage particularly if Floyd carries him to the championship rounds where the extra weight will have a negative effect due to the ?fatigue factor.?
Floyd knows all about the ?weight factor? and, he has seen Manny Pacquiao used it successfully against bigger and slower guys like Tony Margarito.
It is for this reason that he insisted on 152 lbs.
Many including Alvarez and his crew may have thought that 2 pounds is nothing. But, for a naturally bigger guy like Alvarez that probably walks around 170 lbs or more when not in training, getting down to 152 may have a detrimental effect on his body physiology.
No doubt he will make 152, but at what price?
And, if he bloats close to 170 on fight night (Schaefer indicated that there won?t be weight restrictions during fight night), if may cause even more detrimental effects on his speed. It will give him more power but he will be slow and will never catch a runner like Mayweather who most certainly will come in under 150 lbs to maintain speed.
So in the end, Mayweather will in be doing ?target practice? again like he did with Robert Guerrero. He will stick and run avoiding the heavy arsenals of Alvarez.
Why shouldn?t he when that is his proven formula for victory?
His 44 wins proved that.
Mayweather will be sticking and running while Canelo will be chasing and throwing haymakers in the wind all night.
That in effect will produce a lazy 12 rounder, with Floyd winning by a UD.
The only good thing a UD will do is give ShowTime plenty of time to air their commercials.
But for the poor suckers who will shell out a fortune for PPV or even more if they travel to see the fight live at Vegas, it will be another snoozer.
No matter how you cut it, to these people that certainly won?t be an exciting fight!
