CEBU CITY -- World championship boxing returns to Cebu on Aug. 1 when WBO bantamweight title holder Paulus Ambunda of Namibia defends his belt against Tomoki Kameda of Japan, Cebu-based promoter Wakee Salud has informed Philboxing.
Ambunda (20-0-0, 10KO) won the WBO brown and gold belt last March 2 in his hometown at Windhoek, Namibia by defeating Thai slugger Pungluang Sor Singyu (42-2-0, 29KO) in a unanimous decision upset. Sor Singyu is best known locally as the boxer who dealt local boy AJ 'Bazooka' Banal (28-2-1, 20KO) his second loss during their world title fight on Oct. 20 last year at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila.
The 21-year-old Tomoki Kameda (27-0-0, 18KO) is the youngest of the three fighting Kameda brothers of Japan and is said to be the best fighter of the three. Koki Kameda (30-1-0, 17KO), the eldest, previously crowned as WBC super flyweight king, currently holds the WBA bantamweight title and is set defend it for the 7th time against John Mark Apolinario of the Philippines on July 23 in Tokyo. The second son is Daiki Kameda (27-3-0, 17KO) lost his first attempt for a world title against Thailand's Tepparith Kokietgym on Dec. 12, 2011 in Osaka. Their father Shiro Kameda, trained them when they were very young in their Osaka home.
Tomoki earned the monicker 'El Mexicanito' after making a living in the fight trade fighting inside Mexico in the majority of his career so far. He fought in Mexico 16 times winning the WBC silver bantamweight belt in process against Jairo Hernandez on April 26, 2012.
The Kameda brothers have trained at Salud's gym in Cebu from time to time. This time though, The Kamedas wanted the biggest fight of the brood held in Cebu. "They recognize Cebu as the emerging hotbed of boxing in Asia," Salud, whose company, RWS International, will partner with Kameda Promotions in promoting this fight, said.
"The venue of the fight will either be at the Waterfront Hotel in Lahug or the Hoops Dome in Lapulapu City," Salud said. "We are still working on it."
Salud also informed that his rising Filipino boxers Marlon Tapales and Marco Demecillo will be featured in the undercard against yet to be named opponents.
