Joebert Alvarez.
CEBU CITY -- Nonito Donaire Sr's up and coming boxer Joebert Alvarez (12-0-1, 5KO) is set to tangle with former WBO world champion Moises Fuentes (16-1-1, 8KO) of Mexico on August 9 for the ?WBO Interim Light Flyweight Title, Alvarez's US manager Vinny Scolpino has informed Philboxing.

Fuentes recently fought reigning WBO light flyweight champion Donnie 'Ahas' Nietes of the Philippines last March 2 in Cebu City as Nietes' mandatory challenger. The fight ended in a ?majority draw that did not sit well the Fuentes camp, headed by Mexican legend Marco Antonio Barrera, who immediately wanted a rematch. Nietes, however, sustained two deep cuts on both eyebrows from the fight that required several stitches and a few months to heal preventing him to do the immediate rematch with Fuentes. Thus the WBO allowed Fuentes to fight for the Interim Title against Alvarez, who is currently the WBO Asia-Pacific Light Flyweight champion and rated No. 6 in the division.

Alvarez, who is trained by Nonito Donaire Sr and is fighting out of Donaire Sr stable, captured the WBO Asia-Pacific light flyweight title last December 8 by knocking out Jerry Tomogdan in the 6th round in Butuan City in a slambang affair that saw Alvarez himself kissed the canvas in the first round while Tomogdan was down in the second before the 6th round stoppage. Alvarez also emerged champion of his division during GMA7's Buhay Boksingero boxing tournament held March to July, 2011.

Fuentes, from Mexico City, snatched the WBO minimumweight title on Aug. 27, 2011 from Raul Garcia, also of Mexico, via split decision. ?Fuentes gave up the title to challenge Nietes in the light flyweight division last March? 2.

"When we told him about the Fuentes fight, he took it in a hearbeat," Scolpino, the New Jersey based boxing manager who guided the careers of Joseph Agbeko and Joshua Clottey and is now handling several Filipino fighters including Jundy Maraon and Glenn Porras, said. "This is a very good matchup for Joebert. We see a very good chance for Alvarez beating Fuentes. Alvarez ?will immediately come here [the US] as soon as his travel documents are in order."

According to Scolpino, the fight contract indicates an Aug. 9, 2013 date, a Friday, for the title fight. There are reports from Mexico however, that indicate the fight will happen on Aug. 10, Saturday, at The Arena in Mexico City.

Meanwhile, according to ALA Promotions Vice-President Dennis Canete, Nietes will take a tune-up fight sometime in August and will face the winner of Fuentes-Alvarez fight towards the last quarter of this year.
