Darchinyan Beats Gallo, But Will His Handlers Accept a Fight With Drian Francisco?

Last night on UniMas TV, Top Rank presented a match-up between former champion Vic Darchinyan (59-5-1, 28KO) and Javier Gallo (18-7-1,10KO). On paper the match up looks fairly reasonable. In reality it is one sided in favor of Darchinyan. Gallo didn?t have a prayer against the flashy Armenian. He was coming off two consecutive losses prior to the fight.

Darchinyan easily took care of business. He knocked down Gallo in round two with his famed overhand right and after the gallant Mexican got up to resume the fight, he was decked again.

Gallo somewhat recovered in round three even scoring some heavy punches on the Armenian and almost put him on dream land too. Darchinyan however shook off the cobwebs and survived the round.

In the fourth, after some furious exchanges, Darchinyan finally managed to score with good combinations that put Gallo back on the canvas forcing the referee to intervene and waved off the fight.

With the victory, Darchinyan is now possibly lined up for a title fight against WBC super bantamweight champion, Victor Terrazas. (37-2-1, 21KO) on the undercard of the Chavez-Murray card in Mexico City on August 3rd on HBO.

That possible match up is a credit to Frank Espinosa, the new handler of Darchinyan. Without doubt, it is Espinosa?s connection to Top Rank that may make that title fight happen.

But does Darchinyan really deserve the shot at Terrazas?

Darchinyan beat a journey man with 7 losses. That qualifies him for a title shot?

Gallo was beaten by Drian Francisco last year at the undercard of the Viloria-Tyson Marquez fight held at the LA Sports Arena. Prior to that he was a victim of David Quijano (13-2-1,9KO) in Puerto Rico.

Therefore, it was no surprise that he was KO?d by Darchinyan.

A better measure if Darchinyan is really back and positively a better boxer now that he is training with former UFC world champion Rhonda Rousey is a fight with Filipino slugger Drian Francisco.

But that I think is just wishful thinking. Espinosa and Top Rank will never put Darchinyan against Francisco at this time because they know that he can not beat the Filipino.

They need to make some money on him first and a quick route to that is a fight with Terrazas.

And it would not be too far fetch to say that they also know Darchinyan had a short sparring with Francisco at the gym of Justin Fortune and his nose was bloodied forcing Darchinyan to quit the sparring and never sparred again against Francisco.

The plan to make Darchinyan a champion again and generate some cash for his new handlers make back-fire with the Terrazas fight.

The Mexican is a heck of a lot better than their poor measure of Darchinyan?s true standing that is Gallo.

A fight with Francisco would be a whole lot better measure of his qualifications for a title fight.

But will they risk a loss to Francisco?

I doubt it!
