MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas:- One of the many reasons Mayweather fights as little as possible is to have the opportunity to pick the right opponents that will showcase his boxing style. In doing so he maximizes the marketing of his fights and the money he generates. In addition, he virtually assures a win.
That in itself is brilliant.
Floyd Mayweather Jr tonight did it again. He picked the right guy and fought like a matador toying with a bull.
Robert Guerrero tried his best to touch Mayweather. He was successful albeit slightly in the first round. After that it was all downhill for him, chasing an opponent who seems to be there and in a blink of an eye and then nowhere to be found much less touched.
With the hide and seek, hit and don?t get hit style, Mayweather gradually built up his points and in the end all the judges agreed that he swept most of the rounds and gave him identical scores of 117-111.
To the fans however, the fight was less than what they wanted to see. Most fans came to see a brawl but Mayweather did not give them that. Like one pundit said, ?why should he brawl when he can run and hit and get the win??
The fans where booing at some point, but Mayweather could care less. He has a well laid fight plan and no amount of booing will make him change that.
Not even with Guerrero chasing him all over the ring.
Thus, after twelve rounds, Mayweather was still the champ.
Mares downs Ponce de Leon.
The main supporting event that involved Abner Mares versus Daniel Ponce de Leon lived up to the prediction of most of the media people.
They predicted that it will steal the show from Mayweather and Guerrero.
And boy, they were absolutely right!
Mares who moved up to the featherweight division to challenge De Leon for his WBC title dropped De Leon in round 2 and again in round 9.
After the second knockdown it was only a matter of time. Mares did what he had to do and the referee decided that De Leon has had enough and he waived off the fight. Time was 2:27 of round 9.
Other results:
Leo Santa Cruz won the vacant USBA Junior featherweight title with a sensational stoppage of Alexander Munoz of Venezuela.
Santa Cruz dropped Munoz in round 3 and finally got the TKO win at 1:05 of round 5 when the trainer of Munoz decided that his ward has had enough and asked the referee to stop the fight.
Santa Cruz drops Munoz.
Love vs Rosado.
J. Leon Love got a gift from the judges. They gave him a split decision win over the very determined Gabriel Rosado of Philadelphia.
Love was downed in round 6th but apparently that 10-8 round for Rosado did nothing to help Rosado. The scores were 95-95, 97-92 and 95-94.
Ronald Gavril of Poland who now makes Vegas his home won via a TKO over Roberto Yong of Phoenix.. Time 2:12 of round 3. Gavril kept his record spotless at 4-0-0, 1KO.
Luis Arias beat DonYil Livingston via a split decision. The scores were 58-56, 58-55 and 57-57.
Badou Jack dropped Michael Gbenga with a body shot in round 3 and that ended the fight at 2:26 of the round.
In the curtain raiser, Lanell Bellows won via a TKO over Matthew Garretson. Time was 32 seconds in round 4.
