MANDAUE CITY, CEBU ? Melvin Gumban overcame a rugged and determined Fernando Ocon by unanimous decision in the main event of the ALA-Cobra ?Tunay na Lakas? boxing card held Saturday night at the Mandaue City Plaza Square.

Gumban tried to set the tempo by boxing from long range while Ocon used his familiar swarming offense. A right straight from Gumban sent the southpaw Ocon down in the second round.

Ocon beat the count of referee Teddy Alivio and continued to fire back. Heavy exchanges in the next three rounds elicited cheers from the crowd. With his corner pleading Gumban not to be lured into a brawl, the ALA boxer from Escalante City repeatedly scored with a counter right against a lunging Ocon in the sixth and seventh rounds. Ocon, who fights out of the RWS Gym, was effective in daring in and out in the 8th but Gumban?s one-two combos were more accurate in the final two rounds.

The scores read 97-92, 95-94 and 96-93. Gumban remains unbeaten at 14-0, 6 KO?s while Ocon drops to his fifth career loss against ten wins, two by KO.

In the supporting main event, Juren Labordo knocked out Rowell Garcia with hard body shots. Referee Tony Pesons reached the count of ten at the 2:30 mark of the second round.

Renante Suacasa won against Rey Morales in the third round after Morales? cornerman Peter Cuizon signaled that his boxer would no longer continue due to an injured right arm. Time 1:40. Albert Villacampa beat Pedro Balaba by unanimous decision after eight bruising rounds. A point was deducted from Balaba in round five after a clash of heads inflicted a cut on Villacampa?s left eyelid. The scorecards read 78-72, 79-71 and 79-71.

Lito Dante won by 5th round TKO against Rez Padrogane. Dante scored knockdowns twice in the third, once in the 4th and in the 5th before Referee Tony Pesons stopped the fight at 1:09.
