
GMs Laylo, Paragua shine in Iwica Rapid Chess in Bangkok

FILIPINO Grandmasters Darwin Laylo and Mark Paragua toppled their respective rivals in the final round to share the second place honors with GM Adam Horvath of Hungrary in the 1st Iwica International Rated Rapid Chess Championship held in Bangkok, Thailand April 12 and 13.
Laylo defeated countryman GM Oliver Barbosa while Paragua toppled GM Czebe Attila of Hungrary. 2nd place Horvath, 3rd place Laylo and 4th place Paragua tallied 7.0 points each in the nine round Swiss-System event which topped by GM Venkatesh M.R. of India who notched 7.5 points. Venkatesh split the point with Horvath.
GM John Paul Gomez and IM Idelfonso Datu finished with 6.5 points along with GM Jha Sriram and CM Puranik Abhimanyu of India and GM Zoltan Varga of Hungrary.
Barbosa, meantime was stuck at six points and dropped into a tie for 10th to 16th placers along with compatriots FM Deniel Causo, NM Nelson Villanueva and Kyz Llantada.
Laylo, Paragua, Barbosa and Gomez will next participate in the 13th Bangkok Chess Club 2013 in Pattaya, Thailand which gets underway on Friday. The Filipinos' Thailand chess campaign is supported by National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Chairman/President Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr., Secretary-General Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino Jr. and Executive Director GM Jayson Gonzales, Philippine Sports Commission and Philippine Olympic Committee.-Marlon Bernardino-
