CEBU CITY -- The Omega Boxing Gym, home of IBF world light-flyweight champion Johnreil Casimero, in association with ABAP-Cebu have launched an amateur grassroots tournament with the aim of discovering more boxing talents. The tourney, dubbed as 'Boxing at the Park' and sponsored by Casino Filipino Mactan and ParkMall sattelite branches and IPI makers of Omega Pain Killer, have its venue at the ParkMall in Mandaue City. Tuesday's (April 9) matches were the second of four installments. The first installment (elimination) was held last March 16 and the 3rd installment will be on May 1. The final and championship round will be held on June 12.

"We have attracted close to a hundred participants for this tournament," long time referee and tournament chairman Teddy Alivio told Philboxing.com. "We have entries coming from as far as Alcoy and Dalaguete and we have matches in 9 weight categories from pinweight to welterweight. We started this tournament format two years ago and I'm happy that IPI has come out to support it," Alivio added.

"Obviously, this is the kind of program that we want to support," IPI Advertising Manager Angel de la Merced said. IPI stands for International Pharmaceuticals Incorporated, a Cebu-based drug company that markets a array of well known over the counter brands.

Both Alivio and Merced hoped that the tournament will become a mainstay in the local boxing circuit for years to come.
