CEBU CITY ? WBO world light flyweight champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes brought his pet python to the Waterfront Hotel press conference Thursday, sending his own message to team of his challenger, WBO minimumweight champion Moises Fuentes.
?Nag panikad na ko nga mu-away,? Nietes said, ?I cannot wait to fight. I am in excellent shape. I am excited about this fight. My training and conditioning went very well.?
ALA Promotions Pres. And CEO Michael Aldeguer invited fans to watch this historic match-up. ?Come and be part of history. It was 49 years ago when two great champions fought here in the Philippines - Carlos Ortiz and Flash Elorde.?
Fuentes? manager Jorge Barrera talked about the ongoing Mexico sv Philippines sports rivalry. He also said that they are not bothered that Fuentes? record on boxrec and insisted that the real record is 20W-1L, 20 KO?s, not 16W-1L, 8 KO?s.
Nietes however was not impressed and he said that it is his opponent?s style, not his record that will determine the outcome of the fight. WBO super bantamweight champion Genesis Servania and Indonesian Angky Angkotta also vowed to give fans a great fight. Servania said that fans will have to wait and see what happens inside the ring while Angkotta said that if he wins, he will dedicate his victory to his two daughters in Indonesia.
WBO Vice President for Asia-Pacific Leon Panoncillo commented on the objection made by Team Fuentes regarding one of the designated judges for the title fight, Atty. Danrex Tapdasan of the Philippines. "We stand on the integrity of our organization," Panoncillo told the assembled media. "Our president, Paco Valcarcel, appointed the officials and I don't think one judge will risk his career by making a hometown decision. Because if he'll do that then that's the end of his assignments as a WBO judge," Panoncillo said.
Also set to appear on the undercards are Jimrex ?The Executioner? Jaca vs Thailand?s Rachamongkol Sor Pleonchit.
The official weigh-in of PINOY PRIDE 18 will be Friday noon at SM Cebu. Dong Secuya contributed to this report.
