CEBU CITY ? Moises Fuentes spent his fourth day in the Philippines answering questions from the Cebu sports media. The Mexican boxer proudly displayed his WBO minimumweight title belt, sending a not so subtle reminder that he is also a world champion.
Fuentes was accompanied by manager Jorge Barrera, Trainers Genaro Segura and Aaron Rodriguez during the press conference held today at the FORMO Restaurant, Banilad Town Centre. They talked about the March 2 title challenge against WBO light flyweight champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes of the ALA Gym.
?I sparred for four months,a total of 138 rounds. One of my sparring partners is former world champion Edgar Sosa.? Fuentes said, ?This is a twelve round fight. I will learn how my opponent will hit and learn where to hit my opponent where it hurts.?
Fuentes was introduced as ?The Baby Faced Assassin?, a moniker made famous by Marco Antonio Barrera.
Jorge Barrera, who is the brother of Marco Antonio, responded to the queries and comparisons between Fuentes the now retired legendary Mexican boxer, who will be here covering the fight at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel.
?Barrera is a great and legendary boxer. His presence will inspire Fuentes who will be a great and legendary boxer in the future in Mexico,? Jorge stated. "People in Mexico are talking about this fight. Fuentes will make his own legend and people will be talking about this fight for years to come.?
Fuentes also bared his true fight record, 26W-1L, 20 KO?s, not the 16W-1L, 8 KO?s posted on boxrec.com. He also said that he has seen Nietes in action in all of his three appearances in Mexico.
Fuentes is tall for this weight category but he said that he dropped to 105 to fight for the title and he is now in his ideal weight of 108 lbs.
Fuentes beat countryman Raul Garcia by split decision for his title and also stopped the legendary Puerto Rican boxer Ivan Calderon in five rounds. When asked to choose which among these two fights was his best performance, Fuentes replied ?Both Garcia and Calderon are both strong. Both fights are important but that is the past. I am looking forward to my next fight, you will see a how it will end.?
"People have different opinions about my fight against Calderon. I know people said he was already old. But he told me he felt 15 years old that night. Every one said that I will lose.But, you know the result.?
Fuentes punctuated his statements by saying that ?Nietes will have to fall.?
Jorge Barrera also talked about that fateful November night when he threw in the towel to save his brother from further punishment against Manny Pacquiao; the fight that gave birth to the Mexico vs Philippines rivalry.
"It was a very difficult decision to stop the fight,? Barrera said, ?The rivalry will continue for years to come. It is a sports rivalry and more great fights will happen.?
At the end of the press conference, Fuentes thanked the hosts, ?We have been treated very well. People are very kind and nice. I also expect to have a Filipina girlfriend when I go home.?
ALA Promotions VP Dennis Canete said ticket sales for Saturday?s fight are doing well and they expect sales to peak on fight day.
