CEBU ? The complete line-up for the highly anticipated eighteenth edition of the Pinoy Pride boxing series was announced today during a press conference held at the St. Mark?s Hotel in Cebu City.
The three main Filipino fighters ? WBO light flyweight champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes, WBO Asia-Pacific super bantamweight titlist Genesis ?Azukal? Servania and Jimrex ?The Executioner? Jaca ? answered questions from the Cebu sports media.
Nietes (31W-1L-3D, 17 KO?s) spoke about the statement attributed to the camp of his challenger, WBO minimumweight champ Moises Fuentes (16W-1L, 8 KO?s) of Mexico that the champion from Bacolod City is only good in the early rounds and has an endurance problem.
?I have been doing my road work up the hills of Cebu,? Nietes said. ?Stamina will not be an issue. I will fight for twelve rounds. I will give a better performance in the final two rounds if it goes the distance.?
??It was only in the Garcia fight in Bacolod that Donnie?s stamina was in question. But you if you look closely at that fight, Nietes rallied in the late rounds.? Trainer Edito Villamor said, referring to Nietes? title win against Ramon Garcia Hirales last October 2011.
?If you review Nietes? three fights in Mexico, he never had trouble lasting twelve rounds.? Villamor added. ?He will not have any trouble lasting twelve rounds against Fuentes.?
Trainer Edmund Villamor on the other hand said that they have prepared a game plan for Fuentes and how to neutralize the Mexican?s right straight.
Nietes also said that his dream fight was to face Roman Gonzales of Nicaragua.
The main undercard bout will feature blue chip prospect Genesis ?Azukal? Servania (19W-0L, 6 KO?s) and battle tested Angky Angkotta (26W-8L-1D, 14 KO?s) of Indonesia for Servania?s WBO Asia-Pacific title. Angkotta remains the only boxer who has beaten Nietes. The Indonesian has beaten Joma Gamboa, Sonny Boy Jaro and Rocky Fuentes and lost to AJ Banal, Fernando Montiel and Jorge Arce.
?I am confident that I will win,? Servania said, ?I have seen films of Angkotta and he is not a tough fighter.?
?We will make Angkotta fight backwards,? Edito Villamor added, ?That is his weakness.?
ALA Promotions CEO Michael Aldeguer has high hopes for Servania and he believes that the unbeaten former local amateur standout will be the next big thing in Philippine boxing.
Jimrex "The Executioner" Jaca (36W-6L-3D, 20 KO's) is set to face Thai Rachamongkol Sor Pleonchit (13W-4L, 5 KO?s), who is a former WBC international featherweight titlist and a veteran Muay Thai kick boxer.
Aldeguer said that if Jaca wins, he will be lined up for bigger fights and a crack at a regional title.
Also scheduled on the undercards are Mark Bernaldez vs Rolando Omelia (8 rounds), Ralph Lulu vs Alvin Makiling (8 rounds), Juren Labordo vs Marlou Talili (6 rounds), Rey Morales vs Abel Gayhun (6 rounds) and Kazuma Ejiri of Japan vs Andrew Palas (4 rounds).
?This fight is a gift to the Cebuano boxing fans who have supported the Pinoy Pride series.? Promoter Michael Aldgeuer stressed, ?Nietes became WBO minimumweight champ here in Cebu, he made his first defense at the Waterfront.?
PINOY PRIDE 18: WORLD CHAMPION VS WORLD CHAMPION will be held on March 2 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel in Lahug.
