Denver Cuello.
Aljoe Jaro, the trainer and promoter of Denver Cuello, the WBC mandatory challenger to the new Chinese straw weight champion, Xiong Zhao Zhong sent copies of the e-mail exchanges between him and the WBC for us to see.
?I just want you to see where I am coming from,? Jaro stated.
Jaro?s action is an apparent attempt to prove that indeed WBC short-changed him.
And based on all the e-mails he sent, he was perfectly right.
WBC is trying to get out of their promise and written guarantee given to Cuello!
WBC agreed to designate Cuello as the mandatory challenger to whoever wins the title fight in China. That was clearly indicated in the e-mails they sent to Jaro.
The e-mail to Jaro sent by Mauricio Sulaiman dated 8-2-12, stated: ?Serve this letter as confirmation that your fighter Denver Cuello is the WBC mandatory contender in the straw weight division and will challenge for the WBC championship vs the winner resulting from the fight to be held in China.?
In a separate e-mail WBC President Jose Sulaiman himself said ?I guarantee in any manner, that whoever is the winner, will immediately defend against Denver.?
Cuello was asked to step aside for a fee to allow WBC to hold a title fight in China against a Mexican fighter Javier Martinez Resendiz
Apparently, WBC put up a Mexican against Zhong because as they stated in another e-mail, ?Cuello would knock out easily the Chinese boxer.?
WBC probably figured Zhong has a fair chance of beating Resendiz, and if the results are otherwise, well, WBC will have another Mexican champ.
What a move from the WBC, huh?
On the other hand, if Cuello was matched against the Chinese, the latter has no chance to win.
A Chinese defeat in a WBC title fight in China would not in the words of Maurico Sulaiman ?help expand the Chinese market to the world.?
It seems however that Jose Sulaiman has more to that.
Apparently Jose Sulaiman wants nothing else than getting a Chinese market open so as to ?leave a mark of history in his Presidency?!
This is contrary to what WBC say about opening ?options and opportunities for promoters.? Apparently opening the China market is not really about the promoters and boxers, but rather about Jose Sulaiman?s legacy!
If such is the case then it would not be to hard to understand why they paid Cuello a step aside fee with a guarantee that he will be next in line.
Sulaiman wants more kick to his ?legacy? not to mention the possible ?sanction fees? that are associated with the huge Chinese market.
The Chinese market certainly affords that opportunity.
Unfortunately, the Sulaiman father and son are now trying to get out of the written commitment they made at the expense of Cuello. They are planning to match Zhong against another Mexican and are again asking Cuello to step aside.
What ever happened to ?being fair? and much more, ?keeping their word of honor??
In one of the e-mails Mauricio Sulaiman indicated ?that there is only one thing in the world - loyalty... If you trust my father and be patient, you will see what loyalty will bring back."
Wow, really?
Is WBC about ?loyalty to Jose Sulaiman? and not the skills of the boxers and the ability of promoters to do fights?
What about the boxing fans?
With the recent events, Jaro indicated that he is not going to stand aside again to satisfy the personal goals of Jose Sulaiman.
?My lawyers are now on this issue and we are discussing out options. Hostisya ang kailangan ko (I want justice)," Jaro said.
Stay tuned. This issue is just starting to heat up.
