WILL THE MEXICAN MYTH CONTINUE?

Hilton Americas Hotel, Houston, Texas:- A friend and I happen to sit next to a group of Mexican boxing fans at a bar in this fancy downtown hotel late tonight and for some reason or another they started talking to me about tomorrow?s fight between Nonito Donaire and Jorge Arce. Perhaps they overheard us talk about the fight.
?You here for the fight too?? they asked as I sat with my friend nursing a tall glass of fruit flavored tea.
When I replied in the affirmative, one said ?I bet you are a Filipino and a Donaire fan, huh??
When again I replied in the affirmative, our conversation went hyper-space. In fact they turned their chairs towards us so they can talk to us better.
They started this thing about the Mexican rivalry between the two countries which they said now has shifted towards the Mexicans following Marquez win over Pacquiao.
The guy on my left said:- ?You know I think Arce is going to continue the Marquez victory by surprising Donaire. Did you see his body at the weigh-in?. Arce looked so buff that he reminded me of Marquez."
I told the guy that muscles don?t necessarily win fights. Then I added that Arce will have no chance ?pulling a Marquez? as the Arce Donaire will face tomorrow is no longer the same warrior we all saw in the years past.
I further said that Arce has over 60 fights and all the hits he has taken will eventually show up and I feel that will happen tomorrow because Arce has not met a fighter who is as smart as Donaire and who can hit hard to boot.
Hearing what I said, another other fellow butted in. ?But Arce is a warrior and he does not back-off even when he is bloodied and battered all over the ring. I know he will have a hard time with Donaire but I guarantee if he can land a punch or two Donaire will feel it."
?It may even drop him,? he added
I asked the guy if he had seen the Donaire fights vs Nishioka, Tyson Marquez, Siderenko and Montiel.
?Yes, he said but those guys don?t have the experience of Arce. Just look how he beat that Puerto Rican idol, Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. He was behind but he found the will to beat him.?
Sensing that the conversation will never end and to regain the privacy I had with my friend before the group butted in our conversation, I decided to tell them that the event tomorrow is a fight, we all have our opinions about it but no one really knows what the outcome will be.
"May the best man win," I said.
But be that as it may, I feel that Donaire will KO Arce before the 6th round and the so call ?shift? they were referring too has not changed. The Mexican myth created by the Marquez win is just that - a myth.
