After winning a rough and tumble fight against a free swinging volume puncher in Javier Gallo of Mexico, Drian Francisco certainly earned himself a shot at the title.
Yes the win was a mere 8 rounder, shortened to 5 by Fracisco?s TKO win. But then again that wasn?t his fault.
It could have been a title eliminator with somebody else or even a title fight with the Cuban ace, Guillermo Rigondeaux. But in both instances, Drian didn?t get the bite.
Perhaps somebody saw something in Drian and decided that a fight with him is a low return-high risk investment
Gallo, albeit a late substitute, took the risk and paid dearly for it. But much to his credit he gave Francisco one hell of a fight demonstrating in many instances that he can take many hellacious shot to the jaw, the body and the head.
At any rate, now that Drian has shown that he can handle huge adversities in the ring, perhaps somebody somewhere should pay attention to this kid from Sablayan, Mindoro.
As the saying goes:- ?He earned it!?
And certainly, he deserves it!
After the fight with Gallo, I had the opportunity to talk to some persons in the know about the future of Francisco.
Although nothing yet is set in stone, this much they said.
Francisco he may be getting a shot with the conqueror of AJ Banal- WBO bantamweight champion Pungluang Sor Singyu of Thailand.
The fight could happen in Mexico owing to the promoter?s home base.
But logic dictates that if two Asians are fighting for a title, the fight should happen in Asia. Therefore, the Philippines have as much chance as Thailand to land the fight.
The Francisco camp is wishing that the fight if it happens should happen in the Philippines.
But there are impediments, huge impediments, in fact.
Unless well-heeled corporations such as Solar Sports, GMA or ABS-CBN throw their unqualified support and provide the hard cold cash, Thailand with all their financial backers may land the fight.
Then the fight may become problematic for Francisco because Thailand is said to lean on the so called hometown decision particularly in big money fights.
But if the referee and the three judges are all WBO appointed from the US, then fairness can be assured.
Francisco, for his part does not care where the fight happens. The kid have developed a fairly good amount of confidence from his last two fight that lasted a total of six rounds, A 1 round win in Mexico and now a 5 round win in LA.
Francisco will be going home for a quick visit to his family and friends.
?He may only have a week?s worth of visit?, said his manager Elmer Anuran of Batangas. ?If there is a big possibility that the fight with Singyou is happening, Francisco will be sent back to LA to continue to train with Justine Fortune at West
Hollywood.?
