PASAY CITY ? Team Philippines scored a 4W-1L victory in head to head match-ups against foreign boxers but missed the big one. AJ ?Bazooka? Banal (28-2-1, 20 KO's) suffered his second career loss at the hands of Pungluang Sor Singyu (43-1, 28 KO's) of Thailand by ninth round TKO in their battle for the vacant WBO bantamweight world title.
Pungluang blunted Banal?s edge in boxing skills by simply refusing to submit and just go forward and fire combinations. Banal started as the sharper and stronger fighter, his jab was on target and he repeatedly hurt Pungluang with his right uppercut and quick lefts to the body and head.
But Banal suffered a cut on his right eyelid in the third round and was deducted a point for repeated low blows in the sixth. Pungluang continued to press the action. In the 9th, Banal got cornered and was thrown out of the ring. He got up and but was caught by a hard right and by more hard hooks. Banal went down and got up obviously still dazed and turned as Referee Tony Weeks was counting. Weeks waived it off at the 1:45 mark.
Pungluang's corner yelled and celebrated as their boxer was awarded the WBO championship belt. A stunned and disappointed Banal cried in his corner.
After 8 rounds, Judge Robert Hoyle had Banal ahead 77-74 while judges Levi Martinez and Raul Caiz,Jr had Pungluang ahead by a point, 75-76 due to Banal's earlier deduction.

Rey ?BoomBoom? Bautista (34-2, 25 KO's) edged Daniel Ruiz (27-6-2, 19 KO's) of Mexico by split decision for the vacant WBO International featherweight title.
Bautista was the more aggressive fighter but Ruiz managed to land clean counters even with his back to the ropes. The Mexican refused to buckle down to Bautista?s onslaught and regained the spring in his step in the 8th and proceeded to trade well placed shots until the final bell. The scores ? Judge Epi Almeda scored 115-113 for Ruiz while judges Salven Lagumbay and Samson Libres had it 116-112 and 115-113 respectively for Bautista. The referee was Atty. Danrex Tapdasan.
Pagara makes short work on Miguel Antoine of Barbados.
Jason ?El Ni?o? Pagara (30-2, 19 KO's) had a successful defense of his WBO International jr.welterweight title and inflicted the first career loss of Miguel ?Hands of Stone? Antoine (17-1-1, 9 KO's) by knocking out the Barbados native in the first round.
Antoine was hurt by a left to the abdomen and Pagara followed it up with a right to the jaw. Antoine sat on the canvas as Referee Bruce McTavish reached the ten count at the 2:48 mark.
Michael Domingo stops Uganda's Ntambe Rabison in the 2nd round.
Michael ?Bruce Lee? Domingo (45-16-2, 24 KO's) stopped Mudde Ntambe Rabison (19-3-1,7 KO's) of Uganda in the second round of a non-title bout. A sharp right to the jaw and a glancing hook to the body sent Rabison down on all fours. Referee Sammy Bernabe signalled the end at 2:04.
Marlon Tapales heads to a neutral corner after sending Indonesia's Rasmanudin in the second round.
Marlon ?The Nightmare? Tapales (21-1, 7 KO?s) showed that he deserves a spot on the big stage and scored a second round knockout win over Rasmanudin (15-3-2, 8 KO's) of Indonesia. Tapales decked Rasmanudin in the first round with a left cross and finished the job in the 2nd with a hard right hook to the ribs. Referee Samson Libres waived it off at 1:10.
For the other matches, Juan Martin Elorde knocked down Gerry Sismundo twice in the second round, once in the third and the referee mercifully stopped the bout in 36 seconds of the 4th. Randy Bullong stopped Kazuma Ejiri of Japan with only four seconds left in the fourth and final round. Val Falcunaya won by TKO in the third round against Robert Agcopra, time ? 2:32.
Supervising the WBO bouts was WBO Asia Pacific chief Leon Panoncillo. PINOY PRIDE XVII was held Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. At ringside were reigning world champions Nonito Donaire and Donnie Nietes and the now retired former world title challenger Z Gorres.
