Levi Martinez.
Through the initiative of this writer, veteran WBO boxing judge Levi Martinez of Las Cruces, New Mexico will conduct a seminar for boxing officials in the Philippines on October 18th.
All legitimate and GAB-licensed boxing judges and referees in the country are invited to the event. Admission will be free.
Martinez is one of the three non-Asian based WBO boxing officials assigned by WBO President Paco Varcarcel to serve as judges in the Banal-Pungluang bantamweight title fight on October 20th at the sparkling brand new Mall of Asia Arena in Manila. The other judges are Robert Hoyle of Henderson, Nevada and Raul Caiz Jr of Los Angeles, CA.
Helping the Filipino boxing officials improve in any way he can through professional seminars has been a long time goal of this writer.
However because of challenges in acquiring funds to bring a speaker to the Philippines, it took a while to get the plan in motion.
Until WBO announced that Martinez will be coming to Manila for the PinoyPride XVII.
The plan for this particular seminar on October 18th was conceptualized years ago when this writer together with PhilBoxing.com webmaster, Dong Secuya, met with Martinez in Mexico during one of the fights of the now WBO World Flyweight Champion Donnie Nietes in that country.
This writer brought up the idea of conducting a seminar in the Philippines to Martinez. Without thinking twice Martinez readily agreed.
?Just give me a plane ticket, a hotel room and food for the duration of my stay and I will be more than delighted to help the Filipino boxing officials through a seminar,? Martinez stated when the idea of a seminar was brought up to him.
So when the WBO announcement was made, this writer immediately e-mailed Don Antonio Aldeguer of ALA Boxing Promotions informing him of his idea. Aldeguer thought the idea was dandy and he gave the okay to get the ball rolling.
Last Monday, when Martinez was contacted regarding the plans to push through with the seminar discussed in Mexico he expressed joy that we can finally get it done.
With that this writer informed Aldeguer who in turned asked Chairman Ramon Guanzon of the PHL Games and Amusement Board for the official sanction for the seminar.
Chairman Guanzon agreed and thus the seminar was booked.
The seminar will be held at the Offices of GAB in Makati on October 18, 2012. The time will be announced shortly.
