SECOND CHANCES FOR MAYOL AND CONDES

Former WBC light flyweight champion Rodel Mayol (31W-5L-2D, 22 KO's) of Mandaue City, Cebu will try his luck on the road once again on Sunday morning (Philippine Time) in what could be his last chance to reclaim championship glory. The 31 year old Mayol will challenge reigning IBF superflyweight world champion Juan Carlos Sanchez (14W-1D-1D, 7 KO's) at the Gimnasio Polifuncional de Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico.
Sanchez, who is ten years younger than Mayol, weighed in at the division limit 115 lbs while Mayol was a pound lighter during the official weigh-in held one day before the fight. This will be the second title defense of Sanchez, who won the title by unanimous decision against countryman Rodrigo Guerrero.
Controversy has followed Mayol like a stalker and this fight is no exception. There were reports posted here in philboxing that the IBF did not receive any copy of the fight contract and had yet to sanction the title bout.
In an e-mail message to this writer after the weigh-in, Mayol said that he has already signed a contract and he has a good chance of winning. He also asks for prayers from his fellow Filipinos.
"Ready na ko sa fight ugma, dako kaayo ko chance nga mo daog kay akung kuntra taas siya pero wala kaayoy kusog unya bata pa, samtang akung feeling kusog ko aning timbanga ug sakto ko sa training ug sparring.? Mayol stated in Cebuano.
He feels comfortable and strong in this weight category and had enough sparring sessions going into this fight.
?Mao mangayu lang ko sa atung mga kababayan ug suporta ug prayers na safe lang ming duha sa akung kuntra, thank you." Mayol added.
Mayol pulled out of his scheduled WBA flyweight title bout in Mexico against champion Hernan Marquez last March when he accused the Mexican of cheating at the scales during the official weigh-in.
Mayol won his WBC lt.flyweight belt in Mexico in 2009, beating Edgar Sosa by second round TKO in a fight tarnished by a clash of heads but lost his crown to another Mexican, Omar Nino Romero, seven months later. Mayol and Romero figured in another contentious bout in their first encounter when Mayol was hit after the referee tried to separate the fighters.
Mayol will hope not just for a victory but for a more convincing ending this time around. His recent performance against Julio Cesar Miranda showed that he is far from being a spent force.
In South Africa, another Filipino ex-champion will try to turn around his flagging career. Former IBF minimumweight champion Florante Condes (25W-6L-1D, 21 KO?s), will challenge IBO minimumweight champion Hekkie Budler (20W-1L, 6 KO?s) at the Emperor's Palace, Kempton Park. Both challenger and champion made weight, Budler at 47.6 kgs. (104.7lbs) and Condes at 47.52 (104.5).
Condes beat Muhamad Rachman in Jakarta by split decision for the IBF title but lost to Mexico?s Raul Garcia in his first defense. Condes fought in Cebu three times as part of his rebuilding process, beating Ronelle Ferreras, Sofyan Effendi of Indonesia and Kenichi Horikawa of Japan. But he would lose in Thailand last year to Wanheng Menayothin. Budler has beaten Filipino boxers Michael Landero and Juanito Rubillar.
The three judges responsible for scoring the twelve round bout will be Terrance Makaluza of South Africa, Lisa Giampa of the United States and Atty. Danrex Joseph Tapdasan of the Philippines. The referee will be Andile Matika of South Africa.
The fight is scheduled on September 22. Johannesburg Time is six hours behind Manila so Budler vs Condes will be fought early A.M. on Sunday here in the Philippines.
