MANDAUE CITY ? Virgilio ?Maton? Silvano of the Omega Boxing Gym overwhelmed Charlie Cabilla of Bukidnon in their battle for the Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) light flyweight title Sunday night at the J Centre Mall Convention Hall.
Silvano dropped Cabilla with a quick one-two combination in the opening round. He got up and managed to hold off the southpaw Silvano?s onslaught until the end of the round. In the second, a clash of heads inflicted a small cut on Silvano?s forehead and this cost Cabilla a point.
In the third round, a left uppercut to the stomach sent Cabilla down again. He managed to beat the count but in the fourth, a right hook to the head sent him down for the last time. Referee Ben Necesario signaled the end at 2:55.
In the supporting main event, Jason Canoy of the Omega Boxing Gym knocked out a tough and spirited Ryan Bongcawil in the ninth round.
Jason Canoy
Canoy pounded Bongcawil with head and body shots but the boxer from Bukidnon managed to hang tough and fire back.
In the fifth round, an accidental headbutt caused a cut on Canoy?s left eyebrow and a point was deducted from Bongcawil.
Canoy staggered Bongcawil on several occasions in the subsequent rounds but Bongcawil showed excellent recuperative powers and continued to punch back. In the eighth round, a right uppercut sent Bongcawil down. He managed to get up but in the ninth, a left hook to the ribs sent him down for the ten count of Referee Tony Pesons at 2:59.
Bongcawil showed a lot of guts but the majority of those at ringside thought he was too courageous for his own good.
For the preliminary bouts: Jack ?Golden Boy? Tepora (Omega Gym) saw the end of his three fight knockout streak and had to settle for a unanimous decision win over the feisty JR Salvador (Phil-Aust Gym).
The southpaw Tepora, a former national amateur champion, knocked down Salvador in rounds one and four of their scheduled six rounder. The three judges? scorecards read 60-52.
Jordan Catubay (Omega Gym) and Sherwin Caday (Sanai Stable) fought to a six round majority draw. The scores ? 60-55 for Catubay and two judges had it 57-57.
Jhaleel Payao (Omega Gym) beat Rommel Banquirigo (RWS Gym) by TKO in the 6th round. Both southpaws started trading well placed punches. In the 3rd, a clash of heads inflicted a cut on Banquirigo?s right eyebrow.
After a point was deducted from Payao, he swarmed all over Banquirigo. Payao decked Banquirigo in the 4th and continued to inflict punishment in the fifth round.
Banquirigo?s cornermen could not stop the bleeding from the cut and Payao continued to score with hard punches. Referee Ben Necesario decided to stop the carnage at 2:34 of the sixth and final round
In the opening bout of the evening, Charlie Pucdol (Omega Gym) knocked out Jerome Casas (Leyte) with a left and right hooks to the body at 1:59 of the third round.
This fight card billed as ?FIGHT FURY? was presented by Omega Pain Killer/International Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Naris Singwangcha Promotions.
Among the spectators at ringside was former WBC lt.flyweight champion Rodel Mayol.
