DUMAGUETE CITY ? AJ ?Bazooka? Banal won a lopsided unanimous verdict against Ruben Manakane of Indonesia in a fight held at the Dumaguete City Quadrangle Saturday night.

The defensive minded Manakane used the entire area of the ring to stay away from Banal in the first two rounds. Banal, the reigning WBO Asia-Pacific bantamweight champion, caught up with the Indonesian in the third and knocked him down twice with his powerful left straight.

But the Indonesian managed to hang on despite being staggered in the subsequent rounds. All three judges scored it 80-70 for Banal in this eight round contest.

Banal needed the rounds. His only other fight this year was a first round TKO over Raul Hidalgo of Mexico last March.

This fight was billed as ?ONE LAST TIME BEFORE THE BIG TIME? and is considered a prelude to Banal fighting for the vacant WBO bantamweight world title.

For the fights under the ALA-COBRA ENERGY DRINK ?TUNAY NA LAKAS? boxing series:

Joseph Von Mi?oza stopped RJ Ano-os in the sixth round. Both boxers started the fight with well-placed hooks and uppercuts. In the fourth, Mi?oza pinned Ano-os in his corner and landed hard shots but Ano-os managed to fire back.

Heavy exchanges continued until a series of hard uppercuts sent Ano-os down. He got up but Mi?oza sent him down again. Referee Teddy Alivio signaled the end at the 1:42 mark.

Melvin Gumban won by TKO against Aroel Romasasa in four rounds. Sharp uppercuts from Gumban made Romasasa turn his back and signal that he had enough. Time 1:40.

Roma Rate won a hard fought majority decision win over Lyndel Radoc after 8 rounds. This fight was a give and take affair but Rate?s body blows in the fifth and his strong finish turned back Radoc?s spirited challenge. The scores 79-73, 78-75 for Rate and one judge had it 76-76.

Reymund Tabogon beat Lito Dante by split decision. The scorecards read 57-56 Dante and two judges had it 58-55 and 58-56 for Tabogon. One point was deducted from Dante due to a headbutt that inflicted a cut on Tabogon?s left eyelid in the 4th round.

Pedro Balaba used an overhand right to knockout Cristian Saga in the third round. Referee Ben Necessario counted Saga out at the 1:12 mark.

Rey Morales knocked down Ian Teves with a right hook in the first and second rounds. Referee Tony Pesons stopped it at 1:18 of the second and Rolando Lingao-lingao had a successful pro debut, beating Steven Recaborda by 4 round unanimous decision. The scores 40-36, 39-37 and 40-36. The fights were supervised by GAB-Cebu.
