ORTIZ-LOPEZ FULL FIGHT CARD RESULTS (WITH PHOTOS)

Staples Center, Los Angeles: It was night to remember and depending on how you looked at it, the fight card held by Golden Boy Promotions tonight at this home court of the Lakers and the Clippers could go either way - good or bad.
First the bad.
There were three fights that were criticized at least by the fans that sat next to the photographers area located on Section 106. The general consensus was some of the early fights were ?mis-matches".
The first one was the curtain raiser between Randy Caballero (15-0-0, 8KO) of Cochella, CA who eventually knocked out a ?mis-matched? Jamal Parram (5-6-1, 4KO) of St. Louis, MO. The end came at 1:50 of round 5. Referee Joe Cobian saw enough of the beating Parram was getting so he stopped the fight.
The next one was ?even worse? as per the fans seated next to us.
Omar Figueroa (18-0-1, 15KO) of Weslaco, TX., the WBO # 11 rated super lightweight knocked out journeyman Alain Hernandez (18-11-2, 10KO) of Tijuana, MEX. Figueroa took only one minute and 34 seconds to take care of business.
The third one was not so bad. Michael Finney (9-0-0,7KO) of Parump, NV survived a cut on his left eye brow and won via a unanimous decision over Joel Vargas (3-6-1, 3KO) of Durango, MEX. The decision which resulted from identical scores of 40-36 from all three judges was booed by the crowd who thought that Vargas won at least won a round.
One nonchalant fight however that proved to be a sizzler was the one between Jermell Charlo (18-0-0,9KO) of Houston, TX and Denis Douglin (14-2-0,8KO) of Marlboro, New Jersey. Charlo eventually ended a very competitive fight by scoring a KO at 1:12 of round 5 over Douglin. Douglin was downed towards the early part of the round. He beat the count but did not have the legs for him to carry on. Referee Dwayne Hedgepeth waived off the fight when he saw Douglin helpless and unable to keep his balance.
In the main supporting event, Lucas Mattysee (30-2-0, 28 KO) of Trelaw, Argentina scored the very first knockout suffered by Mexican hero, Humberto Soto ( 59-8-2.35KO) of Los Mochis, MEX. The end came at the end of the 5th when Soto failed to answer the bell. Matthysee said at the post fight conference that he wanted the fight to end by a knock-out because he did not wish the judges to ?screw? him up for the third time. In fact when reminded that at the time of stoppage, one of the judges had Soto ahead, his reply was? They were getting ready to screw me up again?.
The main event was a big surprise and a disappointment. Being close to Victor Ortiz, I can feel his pain. Ortiz is just one hell of an unlucky guy.
Ortiz (29-4-2, 22KO) of Oxnard fought Josesito Lopez (30-4-0, 18KO) of Riverside. It was therefore a fight not only for the vacant WBC Silver Welterweight title but for statewide bragging rights as well.
The fight was fairly even at the start and as the fight progressed, it appears that Lopez started to get Ortiz? number and was connecting very well. But from our perspective high up in Section 103, the fight can go either way.
Then the big surprise occurred.
Out of the blue, at the end of round nine Ortiz quit in his stool citing jaw injuries. Later, at the post fight presscon, the people at GBP verified that ?Ortiz had a broken jaw?. They said that it might have happened earlier in the fight but no one except Ortiz knows for sure.
Ortiz did not attend the post fight presscon and the GBP people stated that he was taken to a hospital as a precaution.
The crowd?s initial reaction when Ortiz failed to answer the bell for round 10 was that Ortiz suffered another ?Maidana Syndrome? (Ortiz quit in his fight against Chino Maidana of Argentina sometime ago). However, no one at that point knew that ?he had a broken jaw?.
The Ortiz debacle blew away the proposed Ortiz-Canelo Alvarez fight on September 15th.
For GBP that does not sound financially healthy, but as they stated at the post fight presscon, Alvarez will still see action on that date. They will find a suitable opponent for him.
One pundit said that the real winner tonight was Bob Arum of Top Rank. ?Now Arum can hold the Chavez-Martinez fight on September 15th without fear of competition from Golden Boy.?
Josesito Lopez wins.
Ortiz vs Lopez.
Matthysse vs Soto.
Finny vs Vargas.
Figueroa vs Hernandez.
Charlo vs Douglin.
Caballero vs Parram.
