Donnie Nietes of Bacolod City will be getting a chance of a lifetime with a world title shot against IBF strawweight champ Muhhamad Rachman of Indonesia.

The 24 year old Nietes, who sports the ring name “Ahas” or Snake, has a record of 19W-1L-3D with 9 KO’s. He is currently the Philippines’ number one light flyweight contender. Rachman (51W-7L-4D, 23 KO’s) will be 34 years old this December. He won the IBF 105 lb. title in 2004 with a 12 round decision win over Daniel Reyes.

He has the edge in experience and his strengths include aggression and accurate punching. He has not lost since 1998. His record shows victories over many Filipino boxers such as Noel Tunacao (KO 2), Ernesto Rubillar (W 10), Benjie Sorolla (W 10), and Bert Batawang (W10). He has defended his title over the likes of Fahlan Sakeerin of Thailand and Omar Soto of Mexico. The 5’3” Indon Rock Breaker will be defending on his home turf. The fight offer is scheduled on Oct. 28 in Borneo. The Filipino’s handlers are looking forward to inking the deal.

The 5’3” right handed Nietes will try to break the string of bad luck plaguing Filipino contenders. The hearts of Pinoy fight fans have been broken way too many times after witnessing the likes of Yukka Gejon, Diosdado Gabi, Rodel Mayol, Randy Suico, and Rexon Flores lose in their world title bids. Juanito Rubillar also lost in Thailand in his bid to win an interim title and preserve his mandatory challenger status. The Pinoy Hawaiian punch, Brian Viloria, was the latest victim of the world title jinx as he lost his WBC lt.flyweight belt to Mexican Omar Nino Romero.

Local fans had a chance to size up Nietes during his lopsided victory over Roberto Rubiilar in Minglanilla. He will have to bridge a wide experience gap when he faces Rachman. A few months ago, Borneo became the waterloo of former pound-per-pound star Juan Manuel Marquez. Nietes will have to enter the title fight with a really aggressive frame of mind. There is an unwritten rule in boxing: You have to take the title away from a champion and win convincingly especially when you are fighting in his own back yard.

Nietes will have to perform like a venomous cobra or black mamba rather than a boa constrictor. The island of Borneo is known for its exotic wildlife. They may have another dangerous creature on their hands when Nietes pays them a visit.
