World Boxing Federation World Light Flyweight Champion Felipe Salguero of Tijuana, Mexico (16-2-1, 11 KO) will challenge WBO World Light Flyweight Champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes, In the Pinoy Pride 14 boxing series by the Philippines and Asia?s top Boxing Company, ALA Boxing Promotions this coming June 2 at the Resorts World and Casino in Pasay City, Philippines. Salguero gave a one on one interview with this writer.
How do you feel coming to the Philippines for a World Title Fight?
I am very excited to get an opportunity to fight for a World Championship. I heard that the Philippines is a very beautiful country and I come to win even I am so far from Mexico.
You are the current WBF World Boxing Federation Light Flyweight Champion and also the WBC Youth World Light Flyweight Champion, what prediction do you have for this fight against WBO World Light Flyweight Champion Donnie Nietes?
I have to win by KNOCKOUT, which is our plan.
Do you feel fighting in the country of Donnie Nietes, the judges will favor Nietes?
No, the judges will be fair; I just want to give a clear decision on the outcome of this fight and not like the Nietes and Principe Garcia fight which was very close and many believed Principe Garcia won.
How long have you been training for this fight?
I have always been training, knowing a big fight will come, I am ready and I will end my sparring this week before I head to the Philippines this Saturday (Sunday morning Philippine Time).
Have you ever seen videos of Nietes?
I watched videos of Nietes , but I actually saw the fight live when he fought Mario ?Dragoncito? Rodriquez here in Mexico. It was a good fight and we know the style of Nietes. My trainer Pedro Mora has come out with a plan to defeat Nietes.
The weather in Manila is Hot and Humid, will you adjust to this weather?
Yes, that will be no problem.
This is your first fight out of Mexico, will this affect you?
No, it will give me more incentive in my heart and soul to show the whole world that I can come to the Philippines and win.
You will have a long flight to the Philippines, maybe around 24 hours to get to the Philippines, will this affect you?
I am in good shape and I can adjust to any situation. I can relax on the plane and my body and mind will be fresh. This is for a World Title and that brings out the best of you. It makes you dig down to bring out the best that you have trained for. I will be Ok.
Do you have any questions you would like to ask?
(Salguero) Yes, how is the food in manila? Can I eat pizza there?
Yes, of course, all kind of foods are here in the Philippines.
Miguel, you have worked with many Mexican boxers in the Philippines, what can you say about my opponent, Donnie Nietes?
Nietes is a very tough fighter. He has beaten a lot of Mexicans and all ALA Boxers are always well disciplined and tough world class fighters. Be ready for the fight of your life.
I heard you have a son that is Filipino and Mexican that you are training, how is he doing?
He is doing well. He loves boxing. I am training him. He has the blood of Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez so he has the beginning to be a great fighter.
Thank you Mr. Salguero for the answers and wish you have a safe trip and may the best man win.
