WBC Silver and International Minimum weight champion, Denver Mayo Cuello (30-4-6, 20KO) of Iloilo and Rizal flew in to LA last night with his trainer-manager, Aljoe Jaro for a quick stop-over and to take care of some important tasks before flying out to Guanajuato, Mexico to face Ganigan Lopez (20-4-0, 14KO).
Jaro wanted the LA stop over to offer Cuello a break from the long trip from Manila to LA. He also wanted to squeeze in a few hours of ?work and sweat? at the Wildcard Gym and perhaps get a few pointers from the guru himself Freddie Roach.
But most especially, Jaro wanted to have our offices make a custom made mouthguard for Cuello.
?I would not like to leave any stone unturned?, he told this writer,? so we decided to include the LA stopover so we can purposely visit you and get a mouthguard for Denver.?
?The fight with Ganigan is very crucial for Denver. If he wins, we will be getting bigger and more paying fights for him?, he added.
Jaro sent me an e-mail last week requesting for an appointment for Denver. We told him to simply call us when they are already in LA as with the new equipment be added to our offices, we now can make mouthguards in just a little over two hours.
Jaro and Cuello came to our offices today with LA local boxing fan Jeff de Guzman at about 10 am. After doing the routine dental examinations and x-rays, an impression of his teeth was taken. They were then instructed to come back in two hours to pick up the mouthguard.
Instead of waiting right around our neighborhood, Jaro and Cuello asked to be driven back to the Wildcard Gym some 20 minutes away from my office so Cuello can squeeze in a little warm ?up routine.
The duo returned to our office late in the afternoon and we fitted Cuello two mouthguards. As per his request, one was red,
white and green, the Iglesia Ni Cristo official colors and the other was red, white, blue and yellow depicting the Philippine flag colors.
Since I will not be making the trip to Mexico as Cuello?s cut man, our staff gifted Jaro a complete set of sterile cut-man?s q-tips and a fresh bottle of epinephrine to use during the fight in case Cuello suffers a cut.
Late tonight, the duo will fly to Mexico to participate in the 5 day fight week activities. There will be press conferences and public work out during the next two days and the official weight-in on Friday afternoon followed by the fight on Saturday evening.
When asked for a his comments, Cuello humbly told us that ?he has put on the required work and training to ensure a victory and that he is dedicating the fight to the Filipino people.?
?Inaasahan ko pong manalo para makapagbigay nang karanggalan sa bayan natin?, were his parting words. ( I expect to win so as to give honor to our country.?)
