Although most of our readers' interest on the fight card slated at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Saturday, July 15 is focused on the supporting main events particularly the one involving our very own Randy Suico and the WBO Lightweight champion, Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz, I thought it would be of interest to talk about the main event involving Fernando Vargas and Shane Mosley. After all, as a Californian myself, it is only appropriate to write about two native Californians who made it to the pinnacle of the boxing world.

Fernando Vargas and Shane Mosley's first fight last February 25th is one few of boxing buffs will ever forget. It can only be described as one of the very best in their era, - a fight between two real time warriors fighting as if it is their first chance at a title. And, because of the performance they showed, it is only natural that a rematch follows. Thus, the Shane Mosley vs. Fernando Vargas - "The Rematch".

The "Rematch" is a production of the Golden Boy Promotions of Oscar de la Hoya and the good people at Main Events. It will be shown on HBO Pay-Per-View.

Shane "Sugar Shane" Mosley (42-4, 36 KO, 1 NC) is a native of Pomona California. He prides himself in having held titles in three divisions, lightweight, welterweight, and junior middleweight. A couple of his legacies as a fighter are his two victories over Oscar de la Hoya. He likes nothing better than to have the same two wins over Fernando Vargas, his other California rival. "To me, there was no controversy about our first fight because one look at his face showed who the winner was. I stopped him once and I will do it again", Mosley said.

Fernando "Ferocious" Vargas on the other hand (23-3, 22 KO) is fighter with a very long resume. The native of Oxnard, California was an ex- Olympian. He was also a two time junior middleweight champ. His fight record includes outstanding bouts with some the great boxers in his division, notably Oscar de la Hoya, Felix Trinidad, Ike Quartey and Mosley. Vargas prides himself in being the last boxer to beat Winky Wright, a superstar middleweight. Vargas did it three days before his 22nd birthday.

In so far as the first fight was concerned, Vargas indicated that "the world knows I was winning, I was winning with one eye. Blind!"

In the exciting undercard, our very own Filipino lightweight contender, Randy Suico will battle for the WBO lightweight title against Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz. Another undercard that is of interest to Filipinos is the bantamweight title fight between the champion, Daniel Ponce de Leon (28-2, 26 KOs) and Sod Looknongyangtoy (27-1, 10 KOs) of Thailand. This fight is a rematch too with de Leon winning the first one. The winner of this fight is a prospective opponent of Rey "Boom Boom Bautista".

This writer is going to Las Vegas to cover the fight card. Stay tuned for more.
