Cebu City ? Former WBC lt.flyweight champion Rodel Mayol had a sparring session Tuesday afternoon at the Omega Boxing Gym of Mabolo against Virgilio Silvano as he continues to train for his title challenge this March against WBA flyweight champion Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez.
?It will be difficult because the fight will be in Mexico,? Mayol said, ?But I can?t to throw away this opportunity. It?s another chance to fight for a world title. I?ll just train hard.?
Mayol has been here in Cebu for a month now, and has sparred with local fighters at the Omega gym or at Rex ?Wakee? Salud?s gym in Labangon. He will once again have Morai Quijano and Nonoy Neri in his corner.
Mayol has a 2W-2L-1D record in Mexico. In 2006, he won a WBC strawweight eliminator by 4th round TKO against Lorenzo Trejo. Two years later,Mayol would be stopped by Adrian Hernandez in four rounds.
He would return in 2009 and dethrone Edgar Sosa by TKO in the second round in a fight marred by a clash of heads. In 2010, Mayol would fight Omar Nino Romero twice, a controversial technical draw followed by a title loss on points.
Mayol plans to return to the U.S. early March. His fight against Marquez is scheduled on March 24.
The air was thick with anticipation at the Omega gym while Mayol was training because they were expecting the arrival of Johnriel Casimero from Argentina later in the afternoon.
