Nietes, ALA Promotions, 42 others to receive sports award tomorrow

BACOLOD CITY ? Current WBO Light Flyweight champion Donnie
?Ahas? Nietes and ALA Promotions will lead the list of sports awardees during the 2011 Annual SCOOP-Bacolod Awards to be held tomorrow at the Casa Linda of the Bascon Hotel here.

Nietes, who has a pair of successful fights here in Bacolod this year, will receive an Achievement Award as recognition of his triumph in the field of professional boxing.

His last two fights had given great pride and honor not only to his fellow Bacole?os and Negrenses but most especially to the country.

The Murcia-born and Bacolod-raised Nietes, first defeated his Mexican challenger Armando Vasqez last April 9 when he knocked down the latter in the early minutes of the first round of the scheduled fight. Later on October 10, Nietes successfully dethroned, then reigning WBO Light Flyweight champion, Ramon Garcia of Mexico during the WBO World Light Flyweight Championship ? the first World title fight held in Bacolod City.

Meanwhile, ALA Promotions headed by Michael Aldeguer ? whose father Antonio ?Bidoy? Aldeguer is from Bacolod ? will also be awarded for its contributions in the field of boxing promotions, particularly in helping the homeground talents achieve their dreams through local and international exposures.

Those local boxers which ALA Promotions had helped out are Nietes, the Melligen brothers, Genesis ?Azukal? Servania and Roy-Roy Sumugat of Bacolod City, OPBF champion Merlito ?Tiger? Sabillo of Toboso, the promising Philippine Flyweight champion Arthur ?El Matador? Villanueva of Bago City, Melvin Gumban of Escalante City, among others.

Other boxers who will also be awarded because of their successful performances this year in professional boxing are Sabillo and Villanueva while Clark Ian Bautista in the Amateur boxing.

Also to be awarded for its contribution in local boxing promotions is the JR Promotions of Rev. Henry Guanzon. Among his protagonists are Sabillo and Villanueva and another prospect under it umbrella is the undefeated Jerry ?Dangerous? Nardo (14 wins, 6 KOs).

On the other hand, other awardees included: Athletics ? 2011 SEAGames silver medalist Eric Panique and promising thrower Maika De Oro; badminton ? Nikki Servando and the Jaguar Badminton Academy; Chess ? FIDE Master Sander Severino; 2011 SEAGames U23 Football Team members Joshua Beloya, Jake Morallo and Gerardo Valmayor III; Golf ? Juvic Pagunsan; and National Volleyball Team members April Rose Hingpit and Patty Jane Orendain;

Likewise to be awarded for its successful sports programs in the amateur level are University Of St. La Salle for football and volleyball, West Negros University for basketball, Domingo Lacson National High School for Softball, Lopue's Table Tennis Association for table tennis, and Negros Taekwondo Union-Tigers for tae kwon do.

Meanwhile, those to be recognized for its thriving program in the professional level are Fil-Sino for basketball, Negros Professional Bowlers Club and Bowling Active Solid Strikers

Fellowship Bowlers Inc. for bowling, Negros Occidental Volleyball Association for volleyball and Bacolod Raw Amateur Warriors League for mixed martial arts.

For the Sportsman Award, Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo G. Mara?on Jr. along with 3rd District Cong. Abelardo ?Albee? Benitez and Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia will be recognized for their remarkable support to various sports endeavors in the city and in the province.

Also to be recognized are GAB Chairman Juan Ramon Monju Guanzon, Oscar 'Dodong' Bascon and Vic Tan for their outstanding support to local basketball and boxing in the province while Antonio Ivan Aguirre in chess as Rafael Lizares and the Yanson siblings, Ricky and Leo Rey, in football. Likewise, to be distinguished for their contributions in their respective fields are Roger Banzuela for volleyball; Antonio Oquindo for softball; and Cynthia Lacson-Tiu for women?s basketball.

Posthumous award will also be given to the former SCOOPers, Angelo Vicitacion, Vic Salazar and Henry Villalva, in recognition to their contributions in the sports communication.
