SHAME ON GAB IF THEY WILL ALLOW CAPETILLO ON SEGURA?S CORNER

Javier Capetillo.
On Sunday, Manila time, Brian Viloria will be defending his WBO Flyweight title against a Mexican challenger, Giovanni Segura at the Ynares Sports Arena at Pasig City in the Philippines.
Segura will be moving up in weight to challenge the Filipino-Hawaiian boxer.
Nothing wrong with that.
In fact, it is tantalizing that another Filipino-Mexican rivalry will be show-cased and in the Philippines to boot.
Perhaps, to a great majority of Filipino boxing fans the fight is most welcomed, particularly that the fight is for a world title. World title fights after all are not an everyday happening in the country.
But to a few, this writer included, something is awfully wrong.
Oh, I don?t mean that it?s wrong to put Viloria against Segura.
Not by a mile.
My concern is not about the Mexican boxer, but about his trainer.
But bigger than that is the apparent negligence of the people running the Games and Amusement Board in the Philippines, from the Chairman to those that are directly involved with boxing.
I raised this issue before but I never seen or read a single comment from them regarding it. They practically stone-walled it.
Their action, or rather their non-action is nothing surprising. It is a typical move by Filipinos, political appointees particularly, when they don?t like an issue or are too scared to make a decision for fear that it may affect them politically.
That is wrong and unprofessional!
Segura came to the Philippines with his trainer, Javier Capetillo.
Yes, the same Capetillo that was sanctioned by the California State Athletic Commission for misdeeds associated with the Antonio Margarito vs. Shane Mosley fight at the Staples Center at Los Angeles sometime ago.
Capetillo allegedly tried to put a ?plaster loaded? gauze pad on the hand wraps of Margarito. He was however caught by Mosley?s trainer who reported the incident to the Commissioners.
After proper hearings, with lawyers seating with both the accused (Margarito and Capetillo) it was determined that the licenses of Capetillo and Margarito be pulled.
Margarito was suspended for a year. Recently he was granted a license in Texas (vs. Pacquiao) and New York (vs. Cotto) through the efforts Bob Arum and his Top Rank associates.
Capetillo to date is still suspended in California and Nevada. However, word is that he is allowed to train boxers but is not allowed to be involved with the boxers during fight night.
They did not deprive the guy of his livelihood, just his ability to work the corners of boxers fighting in the State.
In the Philippines, I have no knowledge how Capetillo will function.
Further, I have no knowledge if he will be wrapping the hands of Segura.
This all because GAB stone-walled the issue.
That is why I am raising the issue again.
My concern is the very fact that Capetillo maybe allowed to work the corner of Segura and that he will be allowed to wrap his hands too.
I know that the GAB may reason that they can watch the hand wrapping procedures on fight night to assure that he will not load the wraps.
That is bull-crap!
Why allow someone who is known cheater and whose license is still suspended by two of the largest boxing States in the US to even work a boxer?s corner in the Philippines?
Are we that permissive these days?
What happen to principles? Or is that gone too?
Or is there a hidden agenda? Gosh, I hope not!
Allowing Capetillo to work Segura?s corner is like allowing a heart surgeon with a suspended license for cheating in one country to do heart transplant in another country!
GAB officials at the very least should honor what California has done to Capetillo.
They should not allow Capetillo to wrap the hands of Segura much less to work his corner.
Hey fellows, are you listening?
Be man enough to stand up for what is good for boxing. There is no reason why you can?t!
I know what you are thinking and I understand that no one should tell you how to run your\commission particularly foreigners.
But gentlemen, as I previously stated- it?s all about following principles.
The guy?s license was and still is suspended by the Athletic Commissions in California and Nevada- two of the biggest and most principled boxing commissions in the world.
Isn?t that enough reason to do what is right for boxing in the Philippines?
It is not too late to prevent Capetillo from working the corner of Segura. There is plenty of time to fly in somebody else.
Unless of course you just choose to be bull headed about it, and allow stone-walling proper principles to be the rule at the GAB.
