M?alang, North Cotobato?s Glenn ?The Rock? Porras, who fights under the banner of Gov Manny Pi?ol?s Braveheart Team, will make his US debut on Friday night at the bucolic Chumash Resort and Casino at Sta. Ynes, California, a few miles north of the beautiful seaside City of Santa Barbara.
Porras who sports a record of 26-3-0 (17KOs) will cross leathers against a journey man named Adolfo Landeros (21-22-2, 10KO).
Upon learning who the opponent will be, this writer raised one concern.
Landeros who is a native of Mexico City is a natural super featherweight (130 lbs) while Porras is a bantamweight (118 lbs.)
The bout however was arranged to be on a catch weight of 122 lbs.
Early this morning Porras accompanied by Glenn Donaire drove down from San Leandro in Northern California to my offices at Canoga Park to be fitted a new mouthguard at the request of Nonito Donaire, Sr who trains Porras at the Kennel Gym owned by Arvin Jugarap.
After I took their impressions, Porras and Donaire drove to San Pedro a few miles south of Los Angeles for their ?medical exams.?
As fate has it, all the fighters on Friday?s card were there as well for their medical exams as per requirements of the California State Athletic Commission. Therefore, Porras and Donaire spent the rest of the day with the rest of the fighters going from one medical office to another for all the necessary exams including but not limited to blood and urine and eye tests, EEG, ECG and MRI.
Porras and Donaire did not get back to my offices until 8:45 PM. It was a bit late but they still got their mouthguards.
Porras indicated to this writer that he is ready for the fight even if it happens tomorrow.
?Maganda po ang ensayo ko kay Coach Dodong kaya sa tinggin ko, malaki ang pagasa kong manalo? (I have a good training with Coach Dodong so I feel I have a big chance to win? he said as we shared a nice chicken and vegetable dinner at a nearby ?Pollo Loco.?
Donaire was also scheduled to fight at the same fight card but his opponent backed out and so he is left without a fight.
According to Porras, Gov. Manny Pi?ol will be coming to see him fight. ?Sana po tuloy and dating niya para makita naman niya and magiging tagumpay ko? (I hope Gov Pi?ol will come so he will witness my victory).
Porras selected a funky mouthguard design. ?Gusto ko po yan kasi ibang?iba sa lahat? (I like that as it?s different from anything else?, he said as he admired his new mouthguard.
