ALVAREZ-CINTRON, ARCE-ANGKOTA AND USC-UCLA ? WHAT A SATURDAY!

There are not too many Saturdays when one can sit comfortably at home and through the magic of technology watch three different things on large screen HDTV almost at the same time.
Tonight, it was one of those Saturdays.
And I love it!
First up was the great cross town football rivalry between my alma mater, USC and that other Los Angeles area university on the west side of town, UCLA.
These two schools regardless of their win-loss record during the whole season will almost always put up a great football game to end their regular season. It?s the Super Bowl version of college football in Los Angeles
Tonight the game was great. That is if one is a Trojan from USC and fully understands the great Southern California rivalry. It?s like Ateneo-La Salle and San Beda-Letran in the 60?s all put together.
USC was playing under probation due to some misdeeds of certain former players. They also have fewer players on scholarships. But they have heart and the determination to show that the probation is just another barrier to cross.
Tonight with quarterback Matt Barkley and two of his receivers, Robert Woods and Mike Lee connecting almost at will, USC humiliated UCLA with a huge shut out- 50 to 0. The score is one of the largest winning margins in the long history of the cross town rivalry.
While watching football, I had the pleasure of watching boxing through split screen. I had the football game on Prime TV, the Arce vs. Angkota on FOX and Alvarez-Cintron on HBO.
Thus I saw Alvarez use his power right hand to destroy Cintron in five rounds and Arce win a lackluster 12 round UD over Angkota. And, I got to see all the touchdowns passes Barkley threw to Woods and Lee.
Alvarez is a super power in his weight division. With his recent victories against Gomez and now against Cintron, Alvarez all of sudden in now on the face of Floyd Mayweather Jr.
It would be great if GBP can put him up against Mayweather on May 5, 2012 and give the Mexican boxing fans something to cheer about on their great Cinco de Mayo Festival.
Alvarez stands a great chance to shut up Mayweather.
But I am betting a fight between Alvarez and Mayweather will not happen soon. At least not in 2012.
GBP is still in the midst of developing the market power of the Carrot Top. Therefore, it may take two or three more fights before they will even consider putting him up against the likes of Mayweather.
Mayweather on the other hand with his great love for his record, will not face Alvarez anytime soon.
Alvarez is now on top of his game and he is focused. He maybe young and relatively inexperienced but he is no Victor Ortiz who is so na?ve and trusting.
Therefore, Mayweather will have his hand full with Alvarez. He will never have a chance to throw sucker punches again like he did against Ortiz.
With that, Mayweather can not be sure of beating the kid from Guadalajara. Thus, he will not fight him anytime soon.
Mayweather is a cherry-picker, remember?
If he wasn?t, he would have fought Manny Pacquiao long time ago!
So what?s next for Alvarez?
A fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr looks interesting. But its one fight that may not happen soon either, because of the stupid destructive rivalry between GBP who represents Alvarez and Top Rank who looks after the interests of Chavez Jr.
So in the end, boxing will suffer yet again from seeing great fights.
But what else is new?
