ABAPO POISED TO DETHRONE BAHARI

Filipino Bart Abapo is set to depart for Singapore tomorrow pretty much in terrific shape when he challenges PABA junior welter champ Daudy Bahari in a 12-round showdown on June 15 at the Swissotel The Stamford.

Abapo, the reigning Philippine champion, will be accompanied in the trip by trainer Edito 'Freddie Roach' Villamor and promoter non-pareil Sammy 'Don King' Gello-ani.

The Abapo-Bahari showdown will mark the first time that professional boxing makes a return in Singapore following a 20-year absence.

"Abapo is very confident that we will be able to dethrone Bahari. We already have a secret formula on how to stop Bahari's lateral movements," revealed Villamor in an exclusive interview yesterday at the ALA Gym.

Bahari (28-1-1, 11 KO's), managed and trainer by his brother Pino, is the long-reigning PABA junior welter champ, although he was briefly stripped of the title last year following a non-title defeat in Japan. He immediately regained the title with a hard-earned technical decision over Filipino Dennis Laurente.

"He has been sparring against big boys in the gym. We are not very much worried of Bahari, but of the officials who will officiate the fight," added Villamor, upon learning that two of the judges will be Indonesians, while the referee is Thai.

PABA secretary-general Alan Kim, however, will make sure the officials will be fair, as he will personally supervise the event in Singapore.
