Capetillo (L) working with Margarito.
Javier Capetillo reportedly will be coming to Manila to work the corner of Giovanni Segura when he fights Brian Viloria on December 11th at the Ynares Stadium in Pasay City.
Javier Capetillo?
The same guy that was suspended because of his previous work with Antonio Margarito?
Holy cow!
Capetillo lost his license to work the corners of boxers fighting in the State of California when he allegedly used a ?loaded? padding while wrapping the hands of Antonio Margarito as they prepared to fight Shane Mosley at the Staples Arena in Los Angeles sometime ago.
The California State Athletic Commission later determined that the padding was loaded with a substance similar to plaster of Paris.
Consequently, they suspended Antonio Margarito and Javier Capetillo.
Margarito later on with the help of Bob Arum got his license back in a few States but not in California and Nevada. Texas and New York are among the States that disregarded what Margarito and Capetillo allegedly did and granted Margarito a license.
Capetillo however, today has not been granted a license again in the USA.
Now Capetillo is coming to the Philippines to help Segura in his fight against Viloria.
I for one strongly believe that the Games and Amusement Board in the Philippines should take a strong stand and not allow Capetillo to be in the dug-out of Segura while he wraps his hands. He should also not be allowed to work the corner of Segura.
But he can come and watch the fight from the stands if he buys a ticket.
While it is true that the GAB can watch as Capetillo wraps Segura?s hands to assure that no hanky punky occurs still Capetillo does not deserve to be working anything associated with boxing in the Philippines.
Capetillo was found guilty of the worse crime that can be committed in boxing. Loading a boxer?s hand to create an unfair advantage is a crime. It is assault with a deadly weapon, a felony that must never be tolerated.
People found guilty of such crime must never be allowed again to participate in boxing matches. They must be suspended for life!
Therefore, the GAB in the Philippines should take a strong stand and honor what the authorities in the USA has done and not allow Capetillo to participate in any manner shape or form in boxing events that are sanctioned by the GAB.
Commisioner Guanzon and Dr Nasser Cruz should never allow a confirmed cheater to work the corners of boxers fighting in their jurisdiction.
While is not too late, it is only fair if they should inform Team Segura that Capetillo is not getting a license to working boxing events in the Philippines. The notice will give them plenty of time to find a substitute.
Banning Capetillo in the Philippines will not only gain the respect of international boxing authorities.
It is also the proper thing to do.
Question is: Is GAB gutsy enough to do so?
I certainly hope so!
