COMING IN OVERWEIGHT IS UTTERLY STUPID

Las Vegas, NV: - As a boxer, you are a pro. As a trainer, you are a pro.
People who are pros have an obligation not only to themselves but to the people who come and pay to see the fight.
Therefore, there is no excuse for a boxer to come in overweight, even a mere half pound over because making weight is part of his job as a fighter.
The same goes for the trainer. He has a responsibility to see that his fighter comes in or within the contracted weight. He or she is getting paid to do that. Geez, that part of the job as a trainer!
Today at the Pacquiao-Marquez III weigh-in, two of the fighters on tomorrow?s card came in over the limit.
Top photo, Lumacad and above, Casamayor during today's weighin. Photos by Dr Ed de la Vega.
Joel Casamayor, the Cuban defector who now makes Miami his home was contracted to fight Tim Bradley of Palm Springs, CA for the latter?s WBO Junior welterweight title.
Casamayor who was so cocky and arrogant during the final presscon yesterday came in one pound over the limit.
That is irresponsible and I say - stupid!
How can a guy fighting for a title allow himself to be in such a position? What the hell was he thinking? And, how about the trainer? Was he sleeping on the job?
Purist may say that one pound is really nothing. A trip to the bathroom will oftentimes .take care of that.
But that is not the point!
The point is Casamayor was stupid enough to allow himself to come overweight and that is wrong.
For goodness sake, they have a spa in the hotel complex where one can find a scale. Or they could have brought a portable digital scale themselves.
But they did not because they did not care about the opponent who took pains to be on weight. They do not care about the fans and much less, the promoter. There are selfish!
Casamayor was given an hour by the commission to come back and re-weigh. I am sure he will come in good the second time around.
The same stupid thing happened to Fernando Lumacad of the Philippines. Lumacad, his manager, and his trainers should be ashamed of themselves.
Don?t they know the immensity of fighting in Las Vegas? They should be thankful Top Rank through Michael Koncz gave them a spot on the fight card.
Why in the hell didn?t they act responsibly?
It was good Lumacad was only fighting a non-descript 8 rounder. In fact he is part of the curtain raiser at 3:15 PM. I am sure only a handful of people will see his fight.
Again, that is not the point.
Team Lumacad was simply out of touch and irresponsible. Being such perhaps they do not deserve another chance in Vegas. They are an embarrassment for the Filipinos they represent.
