DONAIRE?S WEIGHT SHOULD NOT BE A CAUSE FOR CONCERN

No sooner than Top Rank tweeted the results of the weigh-in at New York early Friday afternoon, bloggers and forum writers almost immediately started posting their concerns about the weight of Nonito Donaire Jr.

Donaire tipped the scales at 116.25 lbs. versus his opponent Omar Narvaez of Argentina who came in at a respectable 117 lbs. The contracted fight weight limit is 118. lbs.

Donaire who walks around at about 138 -140 lbs. when not in training was allegedly some five pounds over the limit yesterday. All of a sudden at weigh-in he was a pound and ? under.

My law student-friend Ryan Maquin?na who hails from the San Francisco area and authored some of the best boxing articles I ever read tweeted his concerns. ?That means he burned about 29 lbs in 12 weeks,? he wrote.

My response was - ?although 29 lbs looks so much to lose, it took 12 weeks to do it. Therefore that is just a little bit over two pounds a week.?

To trained athletes like Donaire who gains and losses weight almost at will, that amount of weight is really nothing to be concerned about.

In fact his trainer, Robert Garcia mentioned that Donaire dropped three pounds with just a few minutes shadow boxing immediately prior to the weigh-in.

Donaire also has a sure fire method of rehydrating his body that is scientific, medically safe and legal. It?s not just a bunch of bananas and Gatorade. Nor the kobe steak, ?Dean? Quinito tweeted as the main course in the Donaire?s team dinner Friday night.

Suffice it to say although I am privy to some of his methods of making weight and then re-hydrating, I am not privileged to reveal them publicly. To do so will be a violation of the trust he has in me as his one-time cutman.

It would not be a huge surprise if Donaire will come in to the ring Saturday night as super-bantamweight or even a featherweight.

Even at that weight, I have no doubt he will still be able to carry rather easily, the power that he packs in his fists, particularly in his left hand. That is the very same hand that chopped down good opponents like Montiel, Darchinyan and Siderenko.

Making weight should not be a concern to Donaire?s fans and supporters. What they should worry about is if Donaire will carry his power north of the 126 lb limit where big money lurks.

That concern however seems to be mute as well what with that fellow Conte supervising his nutritional intake.

Donaire with his height, reach and very well supervised nutrition will undoubtedly be a huge factor in those weights

And, it would not be far-fetched if Donaire will some day dominate those weight levels as well.

But first, he needs to get rid of Omar Narvaez. And, get rid of him emphatically!
