Cebu City- Carlos Jacobo and trainer Miguel Angel Meza Salazar spent their first day in the country's boxing capital under cloudy skies and rain showers brought about by Tropical Depression ?Ramon?. The situation is befitting considering his ring moniker ?Relampago? or Flash of Lightning.
?When he was younger, he moved like thunder and lightning inside the ring, he was very fast.? said trainer Meza Salazar, ?Now, he has learned control and to calculate his actions.?
They have seen little of Cebu but describes the host island as 'muy bonito'.
The 24 year old Jacobo will fight former WBO superflyweight champion Marvin Sonsona of Gen. Santos City this October 15 at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-lapu City. The Mexicans were tired from the 24 hour trip ? from Mexico to London to Hongkong to Cebu - but were very upbeat about their chances.
?When I won the WBC Fecombox title I felt really strong, Coming here is not a risk for me.? Jacobo said.
Jacobo added that he has trained for two months for this bout. He was in the gym already doing light training and when he got the offer to fight in the Philippines, he just intensified his regimen. He also said that he has experienced training with ?Cuatito? Ruiz, his brother Heriberto Ruiz, and even sparred in the past against world champion Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez and former champ Fernando Montiel.
Jacobo (14W-3L-1D, 12 KO?s) is tall for his weight and is a natural superbantamweight. The 21 year old Sonsona (14W-1L-1D, 12 KO?s) has not scored a knock out since he moved up from the flyweight division to win the WBO superflyweight title from Jose ?Carita? Lopez of Puerto Rico by unanimous decision. He had a draw against Alejandro Hernandez when he lost his title at the scales and was stopped in four rounds by Wilfredo Vasquez,Jr in Bayamon, Puerto Rico in a WBO superbantamweight tile fight.
Team Jacobo will be in Manila Wednesday afternoon together with Sonsona for a scheduled national press conference at the Ayala Center in Makati which will be hosted by TV5 and will be back in Cebu later in the evening.
Official weigh-in will be on October 14, 2011 at Diamond Suites and Residences at 10:00 in the morning to be followed by the regional press conference. Fight day for the fight billed as ?He?s Back With a Vengeance? is Saturday October 15.
