Bacolod City - Leo Camacho, the trainer of WBO light flyweight champion Ramon Garcia Hirales, spoke with this writer Wednesday evening together with Notifight.com Asia editor Carlos Costa and Team Garcia member Alexander Castillo. Camacho, also known as ?El Profe?, gave a sly smile when asked about their game plan against Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes of the Philippines.
?Our plan is to win? he said, ?After beating great fighters like Nietes, we hope that he will join the list of great Mexican champions.?
?Fans should expect a great and memorable fight.? Camacho added.
Garcia Hirales had his training camp in Cebu for two weeks before moving to Bacolod. He has acclimatized well and has adjusted his sleep wake cycle to our time zone.
Cebuanos who passed by the Omega Boxing Gym in Mabolo, Cebu City had glimpses of the champion training and sparring with local boys Jason Canoy and Johnriel Casimero. Ramon?s brother, Raul Garcia also trained at the Omega gym and is here in Bacolod.
Raul ?Rayito? Garcia inherited the WBO minimumweight title when Nietes decided the move up to 108 lbs. Garcia won the interim 105 lb division title when he beat Luis dela Rosa by split decision in Colombia. He became the regular WBO champion after stopping Rommel Asenjo of the Philippines in three rounds last April 2011. He would lose his title to countryman Moises Fuentes by split decision four months later. Raul is scheduled to fight Ivan Calderon in Puerto Rico this October 29.
Ramon ?El Principe? Garcia Hirales will be making the first defense of his title against Nietes at Bacolod City?s La Salle Gymnasium this October 8.
Champion and challenger are evenly matched based on their performance against two common opponents : Erik Ramirez, who lost by unanimous decision to both but Nietes knocked Ramirez down four times; Manuel Vargas lost to Nietes by split decision and lost to Garcia Hirales by majority decision.
