Gary Shaw Promotions held its regular ShoBox-The Next Generation fight card at the Chumash Casino Resort at Sta. Ynes, CA Friday night. The fight card in paper did not appear to be exciting. The main event changed all that.

New York-based Nigeria junior welterweight, Olusegun Ajose (30-0-0, 14KO) won via a very wide unanimous decision over Quebec, Canada?s Ali Chebah (35-2-0, 28KO) in the 12 round main event.

The judges? scores, 120-106, 119-107, and 119-107 however were not the true measure of what transpired in the ring. Ali may have been dropped two times in round three, the first one via a questionable punch that landed in the back of the head of Ali and the second one with a straight left. But he was quick to his feet and gave a good account of himself to end the round very strong.

Olusegun without doubt was the better fighter between the two and showed flashes of good form and style. But his very cocky demeanor like dropping his hand behind his back to taunt Ali led his opponent to land some good shots that threw his head back. If he keeps that cocky attitude, he will not last with the other good junior welterweights around.

In the supporting main event, undefeated lightweight prospect Darley Perez (23-0-0, 18KO)of Columbia stopped a very tough Mexican slugger, Oscar Mesa ( 22-5-0-, 18KO)

Mesa is the same guy that lost to two outstanding lightweights, Brandon Rios and Filipino Mercito Gesta.

Perez clearly was the more seasoned of the two, landing very sharp counters to the hard charging Mesa. In round five a well placed punch opened a nasty cut over the left eye of Mesa that continued to bother him through round 6th.

After the bell sounded in round 6th and the trainers saw up close the damage on Mesa, they decided to inform referee Tony Crebs that their ward is done for the night.

With the victory it would be interesting to see what Perez can bring to the ring opposite Mercito Gesta. But that fight is a long shot as Perez fights for Shaw and Gesta for Top Rank.

Other results:

Heavyweight Joshua Landers (2-0-0, 1 KO) won Ethan Cox via unanimous decision. The scores were 40-36,40-36, and 39-36.

Jesus Hernandez (10-0-2, 2KO) won via a unanimous decision over 38 year old Rodrigo Aranda (8-16-2, 2KO). The scores were all 60-53.

Roy Tapia made a successful pro debut with a 2nd round KO over winless Edgar Flores (0-4-0) Tapia delivered two perfect left hooks to the head that dropped Flores. Flores tried in vain to get up but was not able to beat the count of referee Marcos Rosales. Time 1:52 of round 2.

Local boy Rufino Serrano (11-0-3) continued his winning ways at Chumash with a clean unanimous decision over Jaime Villa (8-10-3, 9KO). Scores were 58-54,59-53, and 59- 53.
