Floyd Mayweather?s top prospect, Jessie Vargas, fought a high level and intense battle against a hard-nose tough opponent in Joseito Lopez. Vargas was incredibly sharp early in the fight with solid combinations and shots to the body. However, Lopez withstood the early onslaught and started to assert his will over Vargas, who was never comfortable after the 3rd round. After the 6th round, Lopez took control of the fight with solid combinations and Vargas was in retreated mode. It seemed as if Lopez was pulling away from the fight late. Vargas was deducted a point in the 7th round after referee, Tony Weeks, ruled that Vargas intentionally landed a low blow on Lopez. However, a late rally by Vargas was enough to win a highly debatable spilt decision. Scorecards were 95-94 Lopez, 96-93 Vargas, 95-94 Vargas. Jessie Vargas remains undefeated at 17-0 (9 KOs) and Josesio Lopez drops to 29-4 (17 KOs). Philboxing.com had it 96-93 for Lopez. The two should fight again in a 12 round bout. (JASON ANIEL)
